Topic Dog Boards / Showing / CRUFTS TV COVERAGE
- By riggs [gb] Date 10.03.02 14:29 UTC
Does anyone else agree that the tv coverage for crufts is appalling. Most of us spend alot of time, effort, money&enrgy throughout the year to get the BBC give us 30 mins a day!!!
Is there anything we can do????
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 10.03.02 15:33 UTC
We also pay the bill and you would think that football fans could give up a hour or two and perhaps hell will freeze over. JH

Is there anyone on this site who was involved in the coverage of each breed group shot at Chatsworth House (The item appearaed before each individual group judging). And how were you approached to take part? Thanks
- By dianep [gb] Date 10.03.02 20:57 UTC
I'd like to know too, especially as one of the breeds isn't even allowed to be shown in the group that it represnted on the coverage at Crufts.

Yes I am jealous seeing that I have an imported breed and I thought that the import reg. was there so that didn't happen!!

What have I started now, did any of you other import people think the same?

Is there anything we can do you ask...Yep, there is..write a letter of complaint to the DG at the BBC..he will then pass it down the line until it rests on the desk of one Dave Pickthall, you may have noticed that he was the producer of the BBC coverage for the last 3 years..he will read it, dictate a letter of few words explaining that although they try very hard it is difficult to please everybody..and you and I are left feeling disempowered by a company that we pay for!..Don't believe that your licence fee pays for the Crufts coverage, it doesn't , the overseas sales and the Animal Planet partnership do that..and that is why we are all left wondering if Crufts was designed as an extension to animal hospital or if it is indeed the premier show for those involved both finacially and emotionally with the exhibition of dogs.Because...they don't need our opinion...we are the exhibit not the viewer...apparently.

You may have a little trouble getting your complaints heard as the obedience people have been writing to the BBC complimenting them on their TV coverage. They write long e-mails then sneakily add a comment about if it was possible to see more obedience next year! So, whether complaints get read in the same light remains to be seen.

I agree. It's very bad coverage of the event and would love to see more of the actual judging. It's really aimed at an audience who don't know much about dog shows but love to see the showing "highlights" which are far to brief for my liking. At least they didn't cover as much of the flyball and agility this time round and just showed us the finals. I thought these events dominated the coverage last year. I expect lots of people will disagree with me here. The overall style tends to be rather flippant but I know they are trying to make it more palatable for a much wider audience. I don't think this is necessary.

Although I found the coverage time short i am sure the BBC know what
they are doing and know there audience we all live and breath it but
maybe most britons would rather watch a good James Bond or something.
It is a shame but thats life.

They manage to show lots of rounds of snooker and darts, now that is boring!!! :D
- By deary [gb] Date 13.03.02 18:45 UTC
What about all the cricket, now thats even worse!!
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 13.03.02 22:10 UTC
I like cricket. JH

Not being sporty i am glad that most of the football is now 'Pay to view' as no longer have to endure it on sundays! LOL :D :D

Now showjumping and Icve Skating I love :) to watch that is!
- By Pammy [gb] Date 14.03.02 16:03 UTC
Ah, but I now endure a double whammy - not only do I have to endure football at all times and all days - but I get the deep joy and happiness of paying premium rates for the pleasure!!! I got it wrong somewhere not sure how - but I lost all my lovely old Saturday afternoon movies etc as well
- boo:(

Tell me about it I got ambushed (after resisting for along time) in an electrical store - I wasn't feeling well (was proper poorly for along time) and they got me when my defences were down!

You would think that the BBC could have put extended version's on either on one of their digital channels or at an obscure time so you could at least tape it, or shown more anyway aren't we an animal loving nation.......
- By Wendy J [gb] Date 20.03.02 17:42 UTC
I have been saying that same thing for years. They interrupt programming to show 4 hours of snooker a day over two weeks - surely they can do 2 hours a day of Crufts over 3 days! Esp in a country that has so many dog programmes already.

Geesh! Do you know that the States gets better coverage of Crufts on Animal Planet than we do? Now isn't that frustrating?

Starting around 1995 the BBC gave Crufts more air time..over the next few years the time increased until Crufts was given two 'before' Crufts slots of programs nearly an hour long , followed by programs every night of Crufts and a follow up program in the week after. Great you all say..but here's the rub...no one complained certainly..but equally no one said "Great job!"..so the Auntie in her wisdom said..'well ..seeems like it's only a minority sport this dog thing'...and cut the time..and changed the producer...
The moral of the story...you don't miss it til it's gone I guess
- By Brainless [gb] Date 29.03.02 14:51 UTC
Yes those were the programmes I enjoyed, especially the one after the event, that showed more of the unseen dogs and in depth of the Obedience etc. I think this was the reall doggie persons program, and the days of Crufts were pretty much as now, but I think we did see more dogs? The preview ones were the fluffy bits that the main programs have become full of!

Yep, the States gets Crufts...not sure which channel. USA channel shows Westminster in NYC both nights in Feb. It's the highest rated show on that network. Unfortunately, I live over here (Germany), so I don't get that the benefit, but isn't it nice to know that someone does ;) :D :p

I do enjoy the Sat. night horse jumping on Eurosport. Amazing, I'm not really a horse person, but I hold my breath for each jump & can't relax until it's over. Really nuts, eh?
toodles

I believe it's on Animal Planet. Don't know any dates or times, but is usually within a month of Crufts - I have a friend who occasionally catches it and tells me about it.

I know this is rather a late post, but i found the dates that it is aired.
AIRDATES
Saturday, June 2,
8 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET/PT
Quite a while after the actual show!

As reagrds to coverage, they show what the vast mojority of the public want to see, rather than the people who it really matters too.
The Westminster show in America gets hours of covergae across the whole country each night! And you can buy a video with highlights of it!
- By riggs [gb] Date 18.04.02 11:45 UTC

- By steph [gb] Date 22.04.02 22:24 UTC
