Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Mum I need to spend a penny!!!!!

My Cairn has just found his bark too but still doesn't seem to know how to ask to go out to the garden when he needs to relieve himself. He has 2 walks a day of about 1-1 1/2hrs  a time and now the weather is milder I am starting to leave my back door open so he can go out when he wants to. But at night or if the weather is cold the door will be shut and he still doesn't know how to tell me he needs to go. Aside from crouching by the back door and showing him how to bark myself does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks again, sorry I seem to be hogging this forum tonight.

I think you may find this is much too excessive for a 4 month old pup

How long would you recommend?

A pup of this age should not walk for longer than 20 mins max at a time.

Be careful what you wish for Andi ;)  A dog taught to bark for what it wants will use it to its full advantage, it will bark to go out, come in, for attention etc...........  Far better to teach your pup to come and find you and go back to the door to get the message over the their human :)
