Well, Tess has really confused me now! On Monday I saw a few tell tale spots of blood on the floor and thought my 10 month old pup must have her first season, but she had no other signs (swelling etc). So we took Tess out and left puppy indoors. By Wednesday I thought it strange that she had no other symptoms and I decided just to check Tess. Yes you guessed - it was Tess in season. The thing is that she's always been like clockwork and I can work one season out to the next. She should have been due end of May, so she's now completely thrown me. Has this happened to anyone else, or is there any reason why it might have happened??

Quite likely having the litter has put her out of sync Lorna. One thing you are going to find now is that in all possibilities, one will bring the other into season! It always works for me! Instead of a 3 week season we get 3 weeks for the first followed by the remaining 2 to 3 weeks for the second!

When Scarlet had her last season I thought it would bring our Ava into her first season....she had her first birthday last Thursday - but still no sign of her growing up (peter pan of the dog world I think?!!) ;)

one of mine was 14months before she had her first one---.seemed like forever,

....my Peggi (Cocker Spaniel) is now 13 months and there's no sign of her coming into season either !!!!

One of mine didnt have her first one till 12 months then proceeded to be an 8 monther!

Thats old Gillian! The old wives story, (And I stress that it is an old wives tale!) is that if a bitch dosn't come into season until after 12 months old then the chances are she'll be barren! I must say that I've rarely found any truth in it! My Labs have normaly come in for the first time at 10 to 13 months and followed this up at 8 to 9 months intervels. The odd one out is "The Flower" who came in at 6 months and reoccurs every 5 to 6 months! (Bit much of a good thing!)

Yes John they thought she was never going to come into season (not that they want to breed) and checked with their vet to see if he thought everything was alright or if there was anything to worry about he just said it could be anytime up to 2 year old and here she is in the nick of time:D Now the next wait is to find out how regular shes going to be.Gillian

22 months is a bit old.
The old wives tale definitely doesn't apply to our dogs. Our pups have jut finished their first at 16 months. Their mother was about 18 months for her first HER mother was well over 12 months and HER mother was about 18 months.
So my last 4 generations must all be barren :D :D :D :D

BTW if only 1 parent is infertile does that mean only half the offspring will be too? :D

Only if it is carried in the other parent as a recessive, L.D. :P

hope this doesn't seem like a daft question, but as Ava seems to be taking a bit longer than Scarlet did to reach her season, then would this also affect the rate at which she is growing too? only, at twelve months, her head seems to be smaller than Scarlets and she's shorter in height too.....- would you say that by the time a bitch has had her first season, she has finnished growing?:)

I've never notices any difference Mair. So saying, "The Flower" is the giant economy size model!
