Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / slipping kneecaps?

Could you please tell me if slipping kneecaps is a hereditary thing and if so would all the puppies in a litter have it? Is there any particular breed more prone to this condition? Does it always have to be operated on or CAN it be operated.?

It is said to be hereditary but some times affects just one dog in a long line so may also be caused by an accident it the dogs joints are not formed as well as they should be. In small dogs, where it seems most likley to happen, some manage very well with out an op. think it depends how bad it is and if it is on both legs. If it is in a med. to lg. dog then an op. may be the best to avoid joint damage. Your vet will or should answer all your questions and explain the condition. Jackie H
