Can anyone tell me how much grooming is required with this breed and how often do they shed their coats. Also is this breed vocal?
The reason I ask is that 2 yrs ago we found this white small dog in an underpass that was obviously dumped or had become disorientated and managed to catch it and take it to the local police station who were going to send it on to rescue. I was intrigued as to its breed and searched to net to discover it was a Janpanese spitz. Since then I have been reading up on this breed but cant seem to find much info on grooming etc. Do they live happily alongside other breeds of dog and would they be cat friendly if trained. Sorry for all these questions but I am trying to ascertain if we would be the right owners for this breed. Thank you

They are a nice little breed, usually get along fine with cats & other breeds. Easy to groom & keep clean, but coats do need regular attention & they do moult. Can be a bit yappy & some are a bit nervous. Contact the breed club for more info.

Thankyou for all the information. I have looked on the sites but none of them give any idea of the grooming needed and whether they moult all the time or just at certain times of the year. I think i will contact a breeder to discuss further.

The Japanese Spitz should be combed and brushed regularly.  This is a very tidy animal that should be bathed only when necessary.  When the dog is shedding, use a comb with a double row of metal teeth to remove loose hairs from the under-layer.

Taken from the first website I listed.

They only moult bitches: when due in season, dogs: once a yearish.  (these can not be dates put on a calender unfortatly (or everyone would know when not to enter a bitch into a show!!! ;) )
