wanted for collage, information and pictures on dwarf
labrador retrievers. We could choose any breed of dog.So I chose
my favorate.
Also interested in other animals, but not hamsters or rabbits.
Hopefully some one can help me. Emma.

Sorry, dwarf labrador retrievers? I've not heard of them, only the regular kind.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 02.04.04 20:19 UTC
Sorry Emma, but there's no such breed. Occasionally a labrador will be born with dwarfism, but that is a genetic abnormality.

As Jeangenie says Dwarfism is a genetic abnormality and such dogs should NEVER be bred from under any circumstances. There is no excuse for deliberately breeding deformed dogs of any breed. It is something I find abhorrent! Labradors in common with all other breeds have a standard to be bred to and this should be maintained.

If the so called dwarf Labrador retriever is the result of a cross then I have to say that any puppies from a Labrador which has been crossed with another dog of a different breed in order to produce a smaller dog would not, by definition, be a Labrador, it would be a cross breed.

I could be wrong John, but I think this is just a child looking form pictures for her collage it doesn't sound to me like she wants to even get one let alone breed it :) so I think we should go easy on this one ;)

Have you tried a Google search, Emma.

I too am sure it's a child, though whether the information is wanted to make a collage, or for college (implying a more serious interest) is unclear. I'm not sure where she could have got the idea that dwarf labradors are a breed, though.
:)

If its college I hope they teach spelling :D

You can't teach spelling any more, it's old-fashioned! And if you comment on it you get called a snob (been there, got the tee-shirt) which is also why I ignored the OP's spelling of 'favorate'. ;)
:D

Don't you believe it Jean - my 6 & 8 year olds are being taught spelling - coming home with lists of words to be learnt as well!!!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 03.04.04 12:08 UTC
My son did too - but the words he had to learn were spelled wrongly! I had to have words with the teacher ...

Don't worry, Isabel. But I must admit I did miss it to start with.

I believe that although there is dwarfism in Labradors in the UK that there is far worse problems in the US. Being a genetic thing all it needs is for a good looking dog who carries the gene but does not show it to do well in the ring or field and to then be well used as a stud dog. Around 10 years later when people are starting to double up on the big winning dog it will start to come out of the woodwork. I can think of one breed where just such a thing (although with another hereditary condition) has happened.

Unfortunately there is always someone who thinks that the malformed dog could be a money spinner. Just think back into history at freak shows! There were plenty of people paying to see other people's misery there!

Hope this gives you a few ideas Emma

I'm not surprised you missed it, John, I could see the red veil dropped across your eyes from here :D

LOL. I suppose I might be just a tiny bit protective of my breed Isabel ;)
