Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / how old to stud?
- By janestan [gb] Date 02.04.04 22:16 UTC
i have just been glancing through some adverts for gsd puppies for sale and have come across some for KC registered puppies for sale from a Show champion stud who is recorded as 2 years old it also states his pups from litters before this one are doing well ,  from this I presume that he must have started stud quite young about 18 mths maybe.
Should this be normal procedure I have no arguments with it but would just like to know what ages you start to stud your own dog?

This is just for curiousities sake as i thought it didn't happen to a dog was around 3 / 4 years old.

Ideally it shouldn't start until the dog has been successfully health-checked, so any time after 12 months (hip-score time) would be acceptable for the first mating. It is sensible to wait 3 months or so till his second mating, and then not used more than once a month or so until he is 18 months to 2 years.

Of course it also depends on whether bitch owners want to use him!

i was told with my dog that you should use him initially around 1 year old so he knows what to do and then wait till he's around 18mnths to 2 years to use him properly for stud.
