Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / irish setter - underbite
- By Guest [gb] Date 02.04.04 15:21 UTC
I have an irish setter bitch who is now six months old.  On her first visit to the vets for her injections the vet informed me that she has an underbite. The vet told me that i shouldn't breed her as the underbite could be present in her young. Is the vet right? or can she have a litter of pups?
I would be grateful for any advice on this matter as Lotti has a lovely temperment and is a beautiful dog.

After years of study I would be inclined to think of your vet as more competent than the majority of the boards views
and therefore follow his advice :)

Hi,
Incorrect mouths are a fault that is easy to breed into a line and very difficult to correct afterwards, so unless Lotti has the correct mouth for her breed (see Breed Standard ) then no, she really shouldn't have a litter.

Have you had the mouth checked since?  They can change quite a bit in 4 months.

Hi Guest, I have Irish Setters too. I would check the mouth again now. As has already been said they go through so many changes in the first 6 months, and anything can happen. The top teeth should closely overlap the bottom teeth which should be tucked behind when the mouth is closed, exactly like humans. If the bottom teeth are forward of the top ones, then she is undershot. Undershot bite is a fault. Why not see if you can pay the breeder a visit and let him/her take a look and give the best advice.

You say the vet noticed this on her first visit, was that at 8 weeks? I'd be interested to hear how things go for you and your bitch, why not register with Champdogs, it's free, and you can come on again and chat a bit more.
Best wishes.
Dawn R.
