hi all,
a friend of mines dog gave birth a few days ago,but she was only on day 50 of pregnancy, didnt think pups could live being born so early,
and yes she has the dates right was due same time as my crystal
mandy
Hi from what i been told the likely hood of them surviving is slim as pups born before the 56-57day do not have fully functiional lungs and hard.
I also been told early whelping can be a sign that something is wrong with the bitch.
So i would have her and the litter checked out to make sure they are all well.

Like Mike I've always heard that around 57 days is the earliest that pups are viable because they don't have enough surfactant in their lungs earlier and the lungs can't inflate without it. Although the dates are 'right', could your friend be mistaken about the date to calculate from - eg is (s)he working from the date of the last mating?
nope she was mated the 8th feb and 10th,my friend has been to vets and he is gobsmaked that the pups have lived and are doing so well, obviously things can still go wrong but all is ok so far

I had a Springer that welped on day 56 had 9 pups and kept 6 but I've never heard of pups surviving that early

brie puppies were early too bye 10 day, they looked like mice very fine coat, big bugling, eyes set.and weight from 6 osz to 8 ozs were to nomal weight for my breed would be from 10 ozs to over 1lb,,
good luck with them

I've had pups on the 53rd day survive!!

Good Luck Mandy, sounds like you could be in for a long day! Holly's temperature is still around 37.4 so we are not quite on our way yet i don't think , I am soooooo excited though I can barely sleep already. Good luck to you both!
Jo

crystals temp is still up and down this am its 37.1,
last night she was ripping and pulling at the newspaper so i thought maybe it was going to happen but nope, today she hasnt eaten yet so who knows,
good luck jo and keep us posted:)
mandy
Hi she sounds like the way mitzy was but she was in 19hours of pre labour before active labour.
You will know when she is almost ready when she tries going for a poop as they think they need to poop and its just the pups pushing down to stimulate the cervix to open.
I will be thinking of you and hope it happens soon give mum a hug from me and good luck.

Holly's temperature is still at 37.4 but she was digging her bed last night like crystal. I thought she was off her food today too but I gave her some of our dinner mixed in with her food and she gobbled down the lot! Just when I think I have a sign she goes and changes her mind! Never mind we will just have to wait for them to be ready, however frustrating it is! lol
Best of Luck
Jo
