I have read on a few of the posts that a good sign of pregnancy is the bitch having a clear discharge.  Could you tell me if this is very obvious or is it just a small amount? Do bitches have a discharge at any other time?

i only noticed a clear discharge just before my bitch had her puppies.  so i think every bitch is different  and the same with discharge at other time different with different bitches

My bitch had a small discharge at around 35 days, she had this for about 3 days and then she had another discharge, very thick, hanging from her vulva about 2 days before she gave birth.

Each bitch varies and so does each pregnancy.

With my last litter  the bitch had a discharge from about day 35  but was only noticable if  you wiped her with a tissue.
I have a bitch in welp now  who is 40 days and is constantly licking herself so much so that you'd never notice any discharge anyway
