our border meg was mated on the 27 jan and is very big pups are moving around
she looks well and is eating titbits her temp is normal at the moment
we took her to the vets at 9.0 this morning vet checked her over and told us her uterus was open anyway at 3.30 vet called and said to bring her down
for a c section at 5.30 this freaked us out as shes showing no signs
of distress at all as i type she is happy pups are moving a small clear
discharge was on her nest but did'nt smell bad i did take her to the vets and she confirmed the uterus was open but there is no signs of contractions
i refused to have the c section because i have a gut felling it will happen soon
but will call the vet out if i have too can any one give me some advice
please sorry about the long post and the rambing on only i dont really know what to do ....dave and a big collie called meg

Well she is not overdue yet is she - today is her date. She is probably in very early stages they have this discharge and it doesn't really smell. The question is it like clear jelly if so thats ok but if it is green/black then don't hesitate to get her now to the vets. Just watch her, let her do whatever she feels like doing. Some bitches just suddenly produce a pup without warning, some go through the process of nesting digging holes and panic trying to find the right place to have them. Keep an eye on her watch her sides to see if she starts to strain, the discharge will increase as the cervix opens more. Some like to get on with it in the middle of the night when it is quiet.
I certainly wouldn't go with a c section yet - but then saying that I am not the vet who examined her, why did the vet feel he should do a c section so quickly was there a problem.

That's a good drop in temperature. I would stay near her overnight, it sounds like things are going to get under way soon.
Good Luck

I remember my first, gosh was I in panic mode, all worked out in the end ok. Put the lights down, if you settle and go quiet she should and then if you are all relaxed she will of course she might wait until the morning ha ha ha.
I'm signing off now because I am going to bed ha ha, but I was up all night on the 3rd Jan my bitch had six pups in two hours between 7.pm and 9pm and then no 7 was a breech with feet tucked up under and I could not shift him and we ended up in the vets he tried everything to shift him but we had to have a c section at 1.00am for just one pup. I got to bed at 5.00am and up again at 6.30. It was so unfair for her to have to go thro that for the last one, and he was too exhausted and didn't make it. It was the early hours of Sunday and my bill was £500.
Have a goodnight

Good Luck Dave, sorry that you have had to wait until tonight typical though. Keep an eye on her for eclampsia have you got any calcium in case.
Don't worry if half way through she has a rest for an hour or so this is quite normal. Gives you time to make a drink.
Will check tomorrow to see how you got on.

Get ready for a long night! ;)
Our litter began at just after 5pm one night. Didn't end until 7am the next morning. Of course, that was 14 pups... not likely THAT will happen to you, lol!
Good luck!!

Hi Dave,
My bitch had breaks inbetween having her puppies, she had 3 within 30 mins of each other, then went 2hrs and then had another 2, she then fell asleep for 4hrs (all the puppies that had been born were feeding and happy) then she had another one, then nothing for 8hrs when she gave birth to another puppy, my vet then arrived to give the puppies and mum a check over, he gave her a shot of oxitocine and she produced her last puppy. So from start to finish it took about 16 hrs. She was very clam through all this (i was the one that aged about 15 years) and all the puppies were feeding well and happy.
What i will say is, if at any point you are not sure ring the vet, my vet was wonderful and very helpful.

Yes is can be quite normal to have a gap the only thing to check is has she been straining hard to two hours and nothing happening if so have you given her an internal check to see if there is a pup stuck. If she is relaxed give her a while.
If she is straining hard for two hours and I mean arching not just gentle strains and nothing happens I would be inclined to have her checked by the vet . What I would do first is give her a walk around the garden on the lead this can sometimes just shift the next one along, also she may want a wee. It is quite possible that all the pups are just gently moving along. One of my bitches took 12 hours to have hers.
Anything happened since your last post. I am still on line.

shes pushing in around 10 minutes gaps but not that hard we can feel other pups moving inside her and shes seems fine shes drinking water and lightly panting pups are feeding and look great
By yappy
Date 02.04.04 08:19 UTC
Thats fine dont worry sounds as though everything is quite normal. She is just moving them along. You could add some milk with some honey disolved to give her some energy. The ten minutes gaps will start to get closer together as it builds up again.
I will check in about an hour have got to take mine out now for their walk, been raining over night - mud again!!!!
Hi Dave, i hope everything is ok??? if contractions are 10 mins apart and not pushing that hard get her to a vet.. Sorry to say i was at the vets at 4am same simptoms ended up with 2 still born pups. a result of slip matings i am gutted, i was hoping to keep a bitch from this litter..

You are doing well for all your panic mode, it is very difficult to know when to just go with it or to panic, but so far so good.

My friends bitch panted all the next day after delivery, I think she was just exhausted, she took her to the vets and she said 'you would be panting too if you had just had 7 babies' she did settle down though, even during feeding she was panting!
I'm sure somebody will be along soon to reassure you!
Congratulations to you both

Well done to you and your girl :d

Panting is quite normal it can continue for several hours, sometimes it is just a little bit of stress but it can also be the beginnings of eclampsia. As this is your first litter and not quite sure what you are looking at I would be inclined give the vet a ring and pop her down just to check she is empty and he could give her a calcium injection just to be sure. He may also give her an oxytocyn injection which makes sure her final contractions push out any bits that are left, did all the afterbirths come away.
the uterus stays open for about 24 hours and any afterbirths will come out but it can help to stimulate it with the injection
If you ring the vet now it is only 7.30 it would be better that waiting until later.
A good sign that she has finished is if she really settles down with the pups and relaxes.
Anyway congrats you made it didn't you. Your initiation is almost over!!!!!!!!!!
