when we put our pup to bed at night, he yelps very loud. it may last for 30 minutes or so, then he stops, and after awhile he does it again. this goes on all night. any suggestions?

sounds as if he's lonely and missing his brothers and sisters. How long have you had him for ?. How old is he ?
It seems to me that you have two options - you could try buying a crate and putting him in it next to you at night.
This way he will associate the crate with somewhere for him to relax and sleep without feeling abandoned - during the day time move the crate downstairs and let him sleep in it when he wants throughout the day. Eventually you should be able to leave both him and the crate downstairs at night as he should have settled more and feel relaxed about using 'his' den.
Alternatively you can just tough it out and leave him to cry - in my experience though this can be very upsetting for all parties and can lead to the pup becoming destructive because he feels so insecure when left.
I always have my pup with me and then over a period of a month or so, get him/her used to being downstairs. I feel it gives them more confidence than keeping them downstairs to start with :)
