I realise this is a really stupid question, but how do you tell what line your puppy is from? I have his pedigree and there are a couple of well known shelties on there Riverhill ricotta and Ch. Tegwel Wild Ways of Sandwick but how do i tell the line..........I know the Riverhills are famous in the breed and Ricotta is ggg Grandfather so does that mean hes from the RiverHill Line?

Not really - the odd example of an affix isn't enough. You'd really need several generations either in the sire's line or the dam's where dogs have the same affix. If the pedigree contains a real mix of affixes then that dog isn't linebred at all.

Think that is one of the things you learn as you find out more about the breed, as you do you learn which lines carry what characteristics and in the end you can tell when looking at a dog what 'lines' he comes from. You will begin to 'know' when you see a pup that it was probably sired by a particular dog and you will know that dog was sired by another whose grandfather would produce say, a nice head, in most of his decedents, and the head would be recognised by you as having come from that line. It is difficult to explain and take time to learn that is why we tell people to speak to either their breeder or someone experienced in the breed, when choosing a stud for their bitch. Because a particular dog may not look as if he has the required attributes but someone who knows his lines will know he is carrying it, and therefore because that attribute is a dominant trait and the bitch also has it in her lines the chance of a pup possessing it is high.
Sure someone will be on to tell you in a clearer and more concise manner, but I think a dogs line is his ancestry and knowing his line means knowing the inherited factors in that line.
There are quite a few recurring - Glensanda affix runs right from GGG Grandparents up until Leo himself as he is a Glensanda sheltie.
As does "herds" which runs from GGG Grandparents to Grandparents
and Mistmere goes right from GGG Grandparents up to the Sire
so im not sure what line he would be classed as

Are the dogs in his pedigree related and do they appear on both sides of the pedigree, I am not sure what you mean by "what line would he be classed as" he would be classed as from his dam and sire and if you wish to breed you would need to look at both sides of his pedigree or if you are wishing to buy in a bitch that would suite his "lines" ancestry then you would probably be best to find one with similar breeding but would have to be sure that his "lines" do not carry either health problems or an unwanted physical characteristic. If you are wanting to tell people about your boys background it is normal to tell them the Affix of the dam and sire and then if they wish to know the name of the parents, if the people you are talking to are interested in the breed they will then know all the need to about your dog.
