I have volunteered, with my Daughter, to 'dress' the Marquee at My Son's Wedding, I have sorted out most bits & pieces, but would like to have a bit of knowledge when going to a Florist to order something for the Top Table, I have bought Square bud vases for the other tables and would like to know what I could put in them, keeping the cost down, what would be in season for June - any help would be appreciated.

Hi Sweep,
I used to be a florist in my dark and distant past!
Do you mean that you want the florist to do an arrangement for the top table, or are you doing it in the bud vases?
For filling bud vases, I would suggest spray carnations, which come in a variety of colours to match the wedding colour scheme, or pinks (the single, scented carnations) Spray carnations are quite cheap, look nice in a vase as a single stem, and the little spikey leaves along the stems can be broken off and used as greenery. You can also use fronds of leylandi or eucalyptus cut from garden trees to save money. Add a little gypsophila (baby's breath) et voila!
Another nice touch for the top table, which I did for a friend's wedding, is an ivy garland- sounds complicated, but dead easy and cheap! Just buy a couple of hanging ivy pot plants, cut off the long stems, and use thin wire to attach them end to end, until you get to the required length. Drape them around the table and attach to the tablecloth with pins. It looks lovely.
Hope these tips help. Good luck!

I think in small vases it looks very elegant to put single flowers like orchids using some coloured crystals you can get from florists they come in various colours, very chic :D or maybe some fragrant old fashioned roses, lots of people use carnations,so something a little different could be impressive and not necessarily expensive.
Not exactly the answer to your question, but an idea all the same. One of my collegues at work recently got married and he used huge terracota pots filled with sand, then planted silver birch trees in them (he bought the trees from a wholesalers),then they put coloured christmas lights entwined through the branches, very effective and they still had the pots left for their garden after the wedding :) it certainly made the marquee look grand.
They colour coded the invites with the place settings and made small posies for each lady at the top table to take home with them too.
Very expensive exercise weddings! glad I had sons ;) although I think maybe I will miss all the excitment of the big day, that the brides mum must feel.
Hope you all have a wonderful time!

Thanx to you both for your input. I am dreading this Wedding but know I have to make the best of things!
I have today ordered Flowers for the 'Top Table' very simple and quite a good price.
The Bud Vases I have bought are Clear Glass about 8 inches high, they are square and as mentioned I think that Spray carnations are a great inexpensive idea, with some gyp - I would have liked perhaps 1 Gerbera and somthing but they are priced per stem so perhaps not. I did purchase a lovely Basket for the Favours which I am making. The Florist was very good too at suggesting things and we may have to get our Familys Buttonholes too as I believe that only the main people at the wedding will have theirs provided, don't know as yet I haven't been informed!
Thank you again for your help.
I hope they like the final result - let me do something right!
