Our five month old toy poodle bitch sometimes "humps" our legs (or arms)! Is this normal? I don't remember our first bitch doing this, but our dog certainly did!

Yes, it is normal, not all do it but a good few do, it seems more common in the toy breeds but I don't know why.

Not more common in toy breeds - just more common that owners let it carry on. A GSD or a Bull Mastiff tries the same thing - and you better believe the owners are going to put an end to it *very* quickly. :-)

Believe me, we do tell her to stop and push her away! We don't just let her continue till she's, errm, finished!!!
Glad you've raised this point as I was just about to.....................Carly, my Lhasa X girl is 17 weeks old and last night was humping her teddy bear like crazy !! I do not stop her........turn away in embarassment !! I have always had girl dogs but can never remember them doing this so young.
Youngsters today eh? ....................................

Hi Stacey, you may be right but none of mine have done it, (all med to Lg) nor my sisters until she got a couple of CKCS and they were a pain in the knee cap - and the virtue of cushions and soft toys went straight out of the window.

What exactly is it that makes bitches hump? Our leonberger puppy has done it once, but since then hasnt tried it which is odd. it was a one off! (would be embarassing if she were full grown!!). its so funny particularly with prudish people.

They all will and if you are lucky it is only other dogs, have always thought they are practicing to be the dominant little tarts they all grow up to be. :)

Breeds I've owned have ranged from Yorkies to GSDs, spayed and intact.. and none of them have had a humping problem with respect to any part of humans or other canines. :-) (Although until she was spayed my Cairn was very much in lust with a soft sofa pillow I bought at Homebase.)

I have a nine year old springer spaniel, which chases other bitches when in season, have tried mating her in the early years, and gave up, she will not let a dog near her. (I have decided she is gay) I also have labrador bitches, they also go through the same thing occasionally, so I assume I have a very strange household, or this is pretty normal

This is a serious post but my dog is trying to mount my (male) cat and when he isn't trying it on he's trying to sniff the cat's back end all the time. This can't be normal can it? Dog is intact and nearly 5 years old. Anyone had the same thing?

Check that your cat does not have a sore of some type somewhere, because yes it is normal for a teenage dog but not of a 5 year old, another thought, is the cat a neutered male.
