I have a 12 week old male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel pup who has now lived with us for almost 3 weeks. He's settled in beautifully, is well on the way to being fully housetrained and is sleeping well. When we brought him home, the breeder gave us a large chunk of fleece that he, his mother and his litter mates had all been sleeping on. He loves his fleece but it is really starting to "hum" and there is a very noticeable, strong doggy smell in the vicinity of his crate. I really want to give the fleece a quick wash but wondered if by doing so, I would remove the smell of his family. Would washing it in non-bio be the best option or what do I do? I just want to make it smell nicer for us but still smell like "home" for him. I'm a novice at all this so would be really grateful for any advice. Thanks! Claire.

After three weeks it should be fine to wash it. He will have accepted all the smells of your house as being familiar, so I'd just go ahead!

What about febreeze? just a quick spray and it takes the smell away for a few days. at least untill you can bring yourself to wash it.
Wash it....he does not need the smell of his old family now :)

wash it!! non-bio would be best!

No question is silly if you don't know the answer. Don't use Febreeze it has been known to cause problems with dogs skins, just wash as normal and make sure it is rinsed well.

Many dogs may be fine with it, however for young puppies and the incontinent urine can react badly with the fabric conditioner and cause skin problems. I tend to wash my dogs bedding/equipment the same way as I washed my child's, with non-biological powders and no fabric conditioners to reduce the risk of reaction.
Just a personal choice :)
