Topic Dog Boards / Health / heart murmur

My 12 year old maltese chihuahua cross has been diagnosed with a heart murmur and has been put on tablets.  The vet says it is quite bad but I could not bring myself to ask what the implications were at the time.  Does anyone know about this?

The best thing to do is ring your vet and have a chat with them - most will talk on the phone.  These way you will find out exactly how it affects your particular dog

Paula, my Norman has a grade two heart mumour.  He was diagnosed about four years ago and it doesn't effect him much.  He didn't need medication but he's not as old as your fluff ball so that maybe why.  I went into a panic when I found out but a lot of dogs have them or develop them as they get older.  Many humans have them and don't even know til they have an op.  I'd do as Kerioak advises and speak to your vet.  I did, once I'd stopped flapping and it was very reassuring.  Good luck. :)
