does anyone have any suggestions as to how i can treat stud tail. will it heal? will the hair grow back? how long does it take to heal?my bitch has a 2 inch red patch of skin on her tail near the base. half of the area has lost most of the hair. i have been useing salicylic acid 2%
as per my vet. it is used for treating acne (brand name:stidex).it may be working .i have been treating her for 7 days.my vet said if it spreads too much we may have to remove the tail! he said with some dogs stud tail can not be stopped. is that true?

Chris, you should have continued this on the old thread but never mind, to be fair I don't know what it is and therefore how it is treated. Have looked through all my books and can find no reference to it, may be if the vet gave you the technical name for it we could find it. May be it is connected to the reason why she was spayed whilst in season, do you know why that was? Oh and what breed is she.

I have found something that sounds as if it could be what Chris is going on about, maybe you know if it is Jackie. It is called tail gland hyperplasia. http://www.geocities.com/thepuppydiary/Tail.html I am probably wrong. Sarah :)

Hi Mason no your right thats it :)

Excellent link, Mason! :) Chris, if this is what your dog has, I hope this reassures you!

sorry about starting a new thread-amatuer you know! i believe it is gland hyperplasia.the sebacious(spelling?) gland, located near the base of the tail, produces too much oil causing the hair to fall out. she is a dogue de bordeaux (french mastiff). she was spayed while in season,by the rescue kennel, so that she could be adopted out sooner and not have to be put down , i think. kind of dangerous to the health of the dog, the vet who performed the spaying admitted that. she was spayed just before i adopted her, 14 days ago. she is 1 1/2
to 2 1/2 years of age and has had puppies at least once. she was found roaming the streets 30+ pounds underweight.she seems to be feeling great. the brownish-red vaginal discharge has now stopped after 11 days.

Hi Chris, seems we have you sorted now, I don't care how many threads you start but Admin are apt to come along and lock them ;) Well now you have joined we should not have any more misunderstandings. Glad things seem to be looking up for your girl and the discharge is stopping.

Hi I posted a link to an old thread about stud tail/gland tail on the other message.Gillian
