Have contacted their  on-line service 5 times, just to have my email notifications restored, without success, have spoken to everyone, uncle Tom cobbly and all on their tel numbers (running up huge bills in the process :(  )
cannot speak to or email anyone who can sort this out, so I'm looking for a new ISP,  any suggestions warmly received!

Desperately seeking info........liberty ;)

well.my dad had aol for some time and I considered to be a parasite to the pc.

I have used NTL dial up for close on 4 years and am really happy. Cost £15 per month which includes £15 free phone calls so makes internet free really.

>>>dont like AOL

Hi - I've had the same problem! I've rung loads of people and they still keep saying the problem is with Champdogs. I've now opened a yahoo mail address just for champdogs. My email notifications are fine with this. I've put a shortcut on the tool bar to make logging in easy. I'm also going to change when I get time to sort it out. I've been with aol for years but I'm really sick of it now. I don't get the rubbish emails as much but I don't get the good ones either :(

I couldn't recommend my ISP enough, they're a small company, who really care about customer satisfaction, and they're help line and forum is absolutely bang on. I've been with most ISP's over the years including AO hell, and I can honestly say this one is the best.

Thanks Robert, I'll def have a look, I'm concerened that as the laptop (from Dell) came with AOL, it's going to be complicated to change, I'm a complete computor novice
Would you suggest signing up to the new ISP first, then cancelling AOL, or vice versa???

liberty
- By Robert K Date 28.03.04 18:27 UTC
Sign up first and see if you like it, if you don't you can cancel it before the month is up.
As for changing, all you have to do is go to the new connection wizard in Windoze and put in the phone number to dial and your user name and pass word, as simple as that, no CD's to install with millions of Mbs of useless information.
To get rid of AOHell if you change, you just un-stall it, but it does leave an awful lot of spyware behind, if you start doing research in to AOhell on the internet, it really is the pits.

Thanks Robert, have passed your info to the Technical Dept aka Hubby :D

irrelevant i know but aren't all of AOL's phone numbers FreePhone?

My parents use aol and i can't stand it, but it may be a problem with champdogs if its just this site that wont work? Not the forum itself but AOL use servers in America, it depends where this forum is hosted, they may be "routing" problems between the two, AOHell seems to have that problem a lot with a lot of sites

No not all, You have to be careful you dont dial an 0845 number as some are pay as you use. Not everyone is on unlimited

Interesting -
I have stopped recieving notification from CD too but still recieve them from other sites ??
so is it AOL or CD?
- By Daisy [gb] Date 29.03.04 16:18 UTC
Probably AOL - a lot of Internet newsgroup members etc have very, many problems with AOL - it seems to treat emails from newsgroups as SPAM :(

Hi lel :) I contacted Admin at CD when it first happened, they are convinced it's not a problem their end; and as everyone but AOL members still recieve their notification, it's gotta be good ol 'AOL :(

I'm still looking into getting a new ISP :)

I've been using AOL for over 3 years now, no problem, EXCEPT that there is nothing better than AOL v5.0 for Mac users who have an OS older than OS X.  Another board I use has had probs with AOL (the site machinery sees AOL as a software security issue), but I have never had a problem accessing via AOL.

What I do, however, is to browse sites using Internet Explorer 5.0 "piggybacked" on my AOL connection: it gives better resolution of pictures, etc., than the old IE contained in AOL's bundle.

Also, in this neck of the woods, AOL seems to be more stable in its connections than a lot of the others - at least if you're restricted (as we are) to 56K dial-up (there is no BB here).

I did have a flirtation with Freeserve, but found it to be very like other Dixons/Currys products : crap.  I got rid of it, and have to say that, in general, I've been quite happy with AOL, apart from the no new Mac upgrades thing.

Liberty, I'm not with AOL and my emails have stopped too. :(  I haven't got round to contacting my ISP yet. Must do it today! :D

Just contacted my ISP, says they'll get back to me within 8 hours. :) I'm 108th in the queue. :(
- By kath_barr [gb] Date 30.03.04 18:45 UTC
Well, my ISP (not AOL) got back to me with an email saying...

"This is not an issue with our servers. If other users of the forum are having the same problem, then it is definitely going to be a problem either with the forum, or with the mail server being used by that forum."

To be honest I don't think it's AOL as there are a few people that have had the same problem that aren't with them. Perhaps it just seems that way because so many of you are with AOL?

Have been having major probs with aol since 4th March. Cant send email or receive it, have had letter from them saying thank you for closing your account. I havent. Anyone that sends me email gets msg unknown user. When I try to send email msg pops up mailbox cannot be found, contact cust service. Have spoken to hundreds of there call centre staff. Noone seems to be able to cure this and keep asking stupid questions over and over again.  I am really fed up now and have given up ringing them as they are a complete waste of space. The other thing is they give their call centre people false names e.g they all have really strong foreign accents but are all called Dave, John or Chris. I have given them one more chance to sort this prob and if they dont I am going to cancel my direct debit. Does anyone know of any other isp that are similar in format to aol because I find it easy to use.

I have been with Freeserve since 1996, nearly 8 years. No problems so far. As far as I know and my knowledge is very limited, you can't put AOL and Freeserve on same computer, the are not compatible. I did remove AOL once from a friends computer, it was very fiddly as AOL seemed to invade every area but if I can do it then anyone can!

Just as an aside, does anyone have any opinions or experience of Tiscali broadband?

Cheers
Sue

Strange, Rosiesgirl!  I had both Freeserve and AOL running simultaneously for a while (before I trashed the Freeserve) with no problem at all** - but this is a Mac, and, as everybody knows, Macs are far superior to PCs :D :D  ("A PC is a Mac for an idiot", as I've read on several sites :D ).

It may have something to do with the fact that PCs and Macs process information differently (PCs chop stuff up and re-assemble it, Macs handle it all in a continuous stream, I gather).

** not both connected to the Net at the same time, just both applications enabled at the same time :D

I have had AOL for about three years without any problems.  Previously I had Tiscali and was swamped with spam, most of it of a not very nice nature   I still check my old Tiscali account occasionally and there are hundreds of spam mail arriving on a monthly basis.
