Topic Dog Boards / Health / Overlapping SBT teeth - Problems?????
- By demina [gb] Date 29.03.04 12:34 UTC
When I went to choose my sbt pup, I was told to check that the teeth linned up properly and one set didnt rest over the other set (top or bottom) there was a good reason for this (not just looks) and I cannot remember it now.... any ideas? well, the problem is - the teeth were perfect when we got her, but she now has her second set and the top set overlap (by about 2 mm) the bottom set. I dont mind, she dosnt struggle with eating and they are really healthy, its just I am worried about the initial reason why this is a bad thing... I am sure the person who told me to look mentioned personality traits / disorders... any ideas?

Hi Demina

Have you read the breed standard?

Mouth.  Lips tight and clean. Jaws strong, teeth large, with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, ie upper teeth closly overlapping the lower teeth and set square to the jaws

I think this answers your question :)

There is another thread on this board discussing the SBT breed standard which you may well find useful as they are going though each point (or were when I last looked)

It sounds as though your dog's teeth are correct. A 'level bite' where the edges of the teeth meet exactly is usually undesireable because the teeth can get worn away.

w0w, cheers !
I didnt take much notice of the breed standard, as she is a ped with papers, but I am not showing or breeding her....

Thanks, feel better now!

Hi there,
Pedigree and KC papers don't guarantee you a good dog!

You dog sounds like she is still very young.  The jaws grow at different rates, the bottom jaw tends to grow at a slightly slower rate than the top jaw. If there is a slight gap between front and bottom teeth (front teeth in front of bottom) this will often close up a couple of months after the adult teeth appear.
