After reading on another site that some **** had thrown a 13 week old puppy down the stairs because it had peed on the carpet and threatened to drown the poor little thing if no one bought it from him by a set date
It has got me wondering why we dont have anything in place to alert others of bad owners - especially those who have been convicted of animal cruelty etc and have been banned from keeping animals in the future.
I know it would be hard to keep up to date as people can change their name or change address etc but surely there's something that could be set up ?
Any ideas?

( My first and only idea if I was in charge would be to have the "owner" PTS but I dont think that would be allowed somehow - but it would solve LOTS of problems) ;)

I suppose it depends on your definition of 'bad'. I agree that those that have been convicted of animal cruelty but where do you draw the line at the ordinary public. Is a bad person someone who has taken on and then handed back several dogs within a set period of time but hasn't actually abused the dogs in their care or only those that have done physical acts to the dog that the vast majority of us would condemn? Nice idea but not sure how it would work although agree some owners need to be PTS!!

I would back you up to have bad owners PTS  But at the same time the death penelty should be brought back for killers/rapists etc (not quite for stealing a loaf of bread tho!)

This is a tricky area.... How would an unsuitable owner be assessed?

Some years ago I bred a litter, I asked every new puppy owner "Please do not breed from your puppy, if it has a high hip score or any other hereditary problems". About four years later, I was looking for a puppy to buy in. I was told a bitch from my lines had been bred and had a litter. I was surprised as nobody had informed me they were breeding. I had tried keeping in touch with all the puppies, I had bred. Two had moved home and I had lost touch with them, having promised to send me details of their new address neither had done so. One of these was owned by the "lady" who had the litter from her bitch.

So I rang the owner and said I had been given the news that they had a litter from Shirley Johnson. I said who I was but they obviously hadn't realised I was the breeder of their puppy. I asked what the hip score of the sire was and the bitch. The bitch had a highish hip score. Not high enough to worry people these days but in those days flatcoats were averaging much lower scores and the system was pretty much new.

This owner then launched into a massive character assassination of myself! She told me her bitch had a higher than average hip score but if I had seen the terrible home her bitch had come from it was not surprising. She told me that I had an untidy garden full of rusting wrecks of cars and assorted rubbish, (at the time my garden was a listed garden to visit), she said I had 3 unkempt scruffy children with green snotty noses, who looked as though they could do with a good bath, and that my ex husband was clearly a gipsy, who was only in it for the money. She went on to say my ex had told her one price on the phone then tried to charge her more when she turned up! I was apparently a "woman of loose morals and as dirty as the revolting children". She said "Of course I had to buy my bitch to rescue her from those disgusting people, goodness knows what she had been through before I got her. My poor little bitch had fleas and was riddled with worms!"

Well my children were not as she described at all, neither was my ex nor my garden. I was certainly not like that then and still am not! At that time we were on the tourist list for places to visit, we were farming and had some unusual breeds of fowl. As to the puppies... when she came to pick her puppy I had one left which she had and it had just that very day been to my vet to get a health certificate which the vet I used in those days would give to breeders who brought their puppies to him before they went into their new homes!

Having listened to this diatribe against myself and family I said "You do know who I am don't you?" She then realised and slammed the phone down on me! So any list like this, while we would all love to have a black list, it might be so useful if you have people like this woman saying what she was saying!

My breeder gave me a lsit of people not to sell to and when in doubt I called her, I also put people on a list which I gave to her. Which in turn was passed onto other breeders we knew. I know doesn't guarentee but it was a start. :)

When I mentioned to the rescue peolpe about my Tam being in pup they said that they could get a list from the RSPCA apparently of who is banned from owning a pet so if I take the names of the people who have enquired about my pups then they can check to see if they are on that list.

As dollface says it's no guarantee but it's a start.

I am not doubting the sense of the idea, however the DPA would have something to say about it!!!!

But for those that have been convicted then while there is still a valid name and address then surely it would be ok?
I dont mean vindictive neighbours etc just putting anyones name on . I know realistically its impossible to do but it would be nice if we could eh ? :)
