Hi, I own (am owned by :D) a pharaoh.  I love him to bits :) his ears, nose and eyes go bright pink when hes excited or tired.  They are very "feline" It's like owning a big stupid cat.  I take him to agility and hes very good at it and gets very excited about the whole thing :) .  The other thing about them is he has absolutely no odour, not even when hes wet.  It would be interesting to know where you saw your pharaoh as I haven't seen another one since picking mine up from the breeder 15 months ago :(

Hi Clair,
We met him being walked on Chobham Ridges in Surrey, there were two ladies together, the other lady had two delightful whippets. The pharaoh was mainly white and ?tan in colour with a pinky nose and ears and was 1yr old.It has a lovely nature with people, but she said it hated other dogs since being chased as a younger pup. :( so she has to walk it constantly on a lead and kept quite close to her,for fear it may bite any dog approaching it.Our dog Spice 5months old B.C., however is a bit too brave at times and tried to walk under it's legs  and the dog didn't seem too bothered by her.

Our walk turned into a bit of a trek as we got a bit lost :( when we eventually found the car park it turned out to not be the one we had left the car in! so Spice got a much longer walk than we had intended, next time we go there I think I'll pay more attention to where we are heading and not look so much at all the other dogs :D

Ahhhhhh It's a shame the pharaoh couldn't have a run with spice you would have had a very tired doggy indeed :D :D , B.Cs are one of marley's favourite breeds as he LOVES to be chased and of course with the BCs herding instinct its a match made in heaven :D.  I'll bet spice and his new friends were not complaining about the trek though :) :) :) Alas I 'm in the South West so theres no chance of bumping into either you or the pharaoh :(

Bigger than expected, and white and tan???

Are you sure it wasn't an Ibizan Hound rather than a Pharaoh?
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 30.03.04 06:37 UTC
Sounds like it to me, Pharaohs do have a white tip to the tail and sometimes white feet and a small white mark on the chest but if the hound you saw had white on the body or the white on the chest going up the neck onto the face it would have been an Ibizan. The Ibizan size starts where the Pharaohs finnishes at about 21", 22" and goes up to about 29" they are also much stocker and heavy in build. Take a look here and here

Salukidill,
I wouldn't know the difference between the breeds, but the owner said it was a pharaoh. :) hope she knows what breed of dog she has,you have me wondering now :D
Lovely dog anyhow, but a bit on the big side for us,think I'll stick with border collies.

Yeah, Ibizans are beautiful and come in a close third to my current saluki and longed-for but non-existent in Japan deerhound.

Very worrying that a person doesn't know what breed of dog they have isn't it... (good place for a smiley but no idea how to do them)

It has been known, they may well have been told that was what it was or may be they were asking for one or the other and have now forgotten which in the end they got. Mind you I don't think there is much chance of either these 2 hounds found in pet shops. And there are not that may people breeding either, don't suppose we will ever know the full story, may be, just may be it was a Pharaoh dam and an Ibizan sire, and just may be even the breeder did not realise what had happened, the two breeds are often kept by the same people along with some of the other sight hounds of similar background.

I'm sure these people knew exactly what breed they owned and were in no doubt it was a pharaoh.  White markings occur in pharaohs, mine has white toes, white star on his chest and a white tip on the end of his tail.  He is a big dog.  When I went to choose him there was a bitch who had a white patch down her face, this is undesirable markings but they still occur.
Hope this helps

If you read my post you will see that I did described the Pharaoh and gave links so that people were able to see the difference. Yes, Pharaohs do have small amounts of white but could never be said to be white and tan, which is how this hound was described, may be the description given was not clear enough. If you say something is white and tan you would imagin that the white would be more than a stripe down the face, posible white feet and the tip of the tail.

Very true, Jackie! 'White and tan' conjures up a different image to 'Tan and white'. You never hear of Rottweilers colouring described as 'Tan and black', after all! The main colour comes first.
:)

Ahhh yes I see your point now white/tan not tan/white, that will teach me for trying to do a sneaky post at work :D :D
