Hello guys, just wanting some advice please!
I have just today introduced a 4 month old Sheltie to my 14 month old. The seem to get on so far like a house on fire. The only worry that I have is that 'Woody' my 14 month old is CONSTANTLY trying to mount the 4 month old. Should I be concerned? I thought it may be a dominent thing but at evry opportunity he is trying it on!!
The other question I have is about tonight. Should I leave them together in the same room overnight. I intend for them to be together (Woody certainly intends to !!!!) We have a crate from when Woody was younger but sleeps now in the spare bedroom.
Just thought I might ask and see what you say
Thanks very much

Apart from any other consideration, the weight of an as good as adult dog on the back of a young puppy is not going to do the puppy's hips any good at all!

A bit of a problem as you will not wish to give the older one the idea you are siding with the pup but as John has said not a good thing. It is probable a dominace thing but at 14 months your junior is just at the bonk anything stage, if you are not hoping to use him at stud I think you will have to insist he stops for the sake of the pup. Sleeping, I would leave them in the same room but put the pup in a cage if you have one, if not, I don't know, think I may seperate them at least for a few days. Jackie H

Thanks for your advice. I have let them play most of the day in the back garden and the puppy has given as good as he gets. He quickly manages to get out of the problem. I have a crate and have just put him in it and left the older dog in the same room and all seems to be quiet. Thanks again!

Hope you had a peacefull night, I think the play bonking thing is something that only you who can see what is happening will know if the pup is in danger of damage, if he is sliping out of the way then it is probably OK, it will be you it drives mad. All the best. Jackie H

Yep. A very peaceful night until 5:00am which isn't bad at all. He had toileted in his crate, and wanted out. Thanks

Shelties love playing the mounting game with each other. Even when they're girls. I find it is basically all play and a subtle way to show who is the top dog. Mine all take turns though. It's a good idea that you put the puppy in the crate at night. Also give him a break during the day if the older one is constantly hounding him. He is still a baby and needs a lot of rest still. What colors do you have?

Both S & W. The older one is much darker, more Mahogany, the 4month old is at the moment the same colour as a Lab puppy. Thanks for your comments.

I have a very darkly shaded mahogony sable girl who I think is just beautiful. When she was around 4-6 months she was very washed out. The older she gets, the darker she gets. It is a pretty color and I just love it.
