has anyone ever heard of this? i was talking to a guy yesterday who has a sbt and he said that he got this from the butchers and within 2 weeks his dog had got rid of her skin problems and practically doubled in size!!!!
Yes you can get bonemeal (I use Wafcol). I have never heard of it curing a skin problem or had a dog double in size in a few weeks. I use it as a supplement to my dogs feeding since they are a fast growing breed.
Most people use bonemeal as a calcium supplement,i use crushed eggshells.Bonemeal is no longer available here in Australia, you used to be able to get it from health food shops,i have never heard of a butcher supplying it,i will scout around my butchers and see if i can get hold of it.
If you decide to try it can you let us know the results,i dont see how a dog can double in size just from eating bonemeal,do you know how much he gave?Overdosing on it can cause bone growth probs. so i wouldnt want to feed excess amounts.
Let us know how your dog goes :)

I just rang my butcher, they do have it,i asked what it was and he said it is the dust from when they slice the bones,is this the right stuff??They usually just throw it away! I'm a bit worried as when i asked for it he thought i wanted it for the garden as fertiliser

He assures me it is pure bone "dust"! I know alot of fertilisers have bonemeal as an ingredient.
Billybob i am curious about how much this fella is giving his dog,my shih-tzu's weigh between 6-8 kilo.
What do you think, should i go get it?
Christine
hi christine, that's right the guy i was talking to said that it was the dust from the bones....when he went to his butchers and asked for it they gave him 4 bags of it,he asked them how much it is was and they said it was free as they would be throwing it out anyway!!! as for the amounts that he was giving his dog,i'm not sure, but when i see him again i will ask him and i will let you now.I am thinking about getting some for my akita-inu so i will keep you posted.
Hi, bonemeal is a great fertiliser for plants :D, by the way the sort you buy in the garden centres in not suitable for dogs.
Bonemeal is a source of calcium for dogs & that needs to be carefully balanced with the phosphorous content in foods, too much will cause bone problems.
Christine, Spain.
I don't know about skin problems and would be wary of giving too much if it was not balanced with other things.
Imagine if you give a plant a lot of fertiliser - what happens? It grows fast but has not had time to thicken up so cannot support its weight - this can also happen to puppies that grow too fast and their bones are not strong enough.

It is always wise to remember that size is not everything :D :D
