Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / stud dogs ?

I must say that I am really alarmed at the the number of people who seem to think that it is a good idea to put their dog out to stud. The pattern seems to be " he's a lovely family pet and all my friends have said he is a good one ...." Never any mention of the necessary health checks, direct comparism with the best of the breed,  or in depth knowledge of their dogs breeding and NEVER any thought as to how his breeding would compliment any visiting bitches.

Sorry folks it is irresponsible to advertise your dogs in this way unless you are prepared to put in a lot more effort to prove that your dog genes are worthy of being reproduced. Any reponsible breeder will choose their prospective stud dogs with the utmost care and will often have a choice from the top dogs in their breed. That leaves only the irresponsible breeders (often because they think it's an easy way to make money!) who would even contemplate using your dog !.

Theres an excellent piece been written in the recent "Stafford" magazine about the "Responsibilities of the Stud dog owner" that could apply across all breeds :)

I don't think anyone here will disagree with that!
