I keep seeing dogs offered to stud, when and how do you decide to stud your dog and on what base your decision? Just curious.

Different people have different criteria. Some believe in only offering health-tested individuals who are good representatives of their breed, sound in body and temperament with no major faults and excelling in at least one aspect. They will be very careful as to which bitches they allow their dog to mate with because they know that the future of the breed they love is in their hands.

For others, the fact that the dog has testicles is enough reason.

Think that most of the people who have good studs do not offer the dog they wait to be asked.

Would just add that I have 3 males at the moment, all have qualified for Cruft, all have wonderfull backgrounds, and all are health tested. But it has never crossed my mind to offer then at stud, in fact, I have turned down several requests to use them.

I only asked because it seems quite arrogant to be offering your dog s services like that. And the price people are asking seems alot for the dogs doing what comes naturally.

Its not a lot when you take into account all the health testing, care and attention the dog has recieved.

I don't have a stud dog in fact I have a bitch :) but I would think people charge not just for the "service" but the breeding behind the dog and you get what you pay for.

you will find its quite a recent thing all these pet dog owners offering their dogs at stud for ridiculous prices, perhaps the growing popluarity of the internet has something to do with it, but a lot of people seem to be trying to "cash - in" on their dogs wherever possible. I have seen dogs as young as 9-10 months old being advertised for stud, I personally think thats a bit young!!
