Hello to all the doggie people out there. This seems to be w wonderful of exchanging information and advice as well as being a friendly "club" for want of a better word.
My Husband and I are all set to pick up our new arrival, a Weimaraner bitch next Monday. I have wanted one for many years but the timing hasn't been right until now. We are lucky enough to find a breeder who appears to be very well known in this field who, through someone elses misfortune, has a bitch available to take home now, subject to us passing her final tests and her pup, and her "parents", suiting our needs.
I am so excited!! Poor Stephen 'though he has spect all weekend "puppy-proofing" the garden and the paddock. Today has been spent buying everything from her cage (although I don't like to use that term, its her "den"!) to her toothpaste. He thinks I have lost more than one cog, I think. I'm sure there arelots of you out there who will understand that her first day with us must be right; for her as well as us. All the best palns of mice and men etc. Anyway, we have provisionally chosen the name "purdie", hope you approve, if not other suggestions for a girl's name, two syllables and not sounding like any obedience command would be welcome!
I look forward to becoming one of the pack - if you will let me join you. I may be nicnamed pushyposh, but I don't bite; honest.
Would love to get any advice or help with our new addition to the family as there are obviously many years of experience out there.
Kind regards for now,
Pushy

Purdey, a perfect name for a gundog (and a gun).  Welcome the world of Weimaraners, hopefully you will have many years of enjoyment; don't forget to join the WCGB and/or the WA and get involved in their events.  Are you hoping to compete in any discipline with her?

Hi
So glad you like the name. It is a wonerful fluke that Purdey is linked with gundogs, I didn't know that-thank you, I shall change the spelling!!
Thanks for the advice on Associations, I shall be registering her and me with all of them. I shall be training her in obedience to the highest standard---I hope--- and possibly as a gundog as I am lucky enough to live in the grounds of a very large(350 acre+) country house as well as haing a large garden and paddock. I don't think I shall be showing her in any other sense but shall be training her to stand correctly as if I were going to as I want her to be proud to be a Weimaraner and show it!!! Who knows, maybe when she is settled I might consider other things for her. I am an experienced handler of --Cough 26 cough years, although I'm only 40..doesn't that sound old, perhaps I should start fibbing about how long I've been doing it as a hobbie. However, having said that I have never trained a Weimaraner, only German Shepherds and having read many books about it I think I am in for quite a challenge with her!! I'd welcome any help and advice. I am so glad you replied and look forward to chatting with you soon.

Hello

My name is Karen and I have a 16 month old Stafford bitch called Sal. A friend of mines father has a gorgeous weimaraner called Bree.
Purdey apart from beng the name of Joanna Lumley's character in the New Avengers is also the name of a shotgun I think, and is a great name for a gundog.

Purdey is a wonderful name - may you enjoy your Purdey - we are still loved to bits (and of course love her to bits) by OUR Purdey - who is still - just - poodling along at 14 and three-quarters!!!

Our Purdey is a labrador - she is still "top dog" of our pack - her place is in front of the television, resting on her bed (which contains a kingsize duvet) - and all the other dogs (1 other lab, 4 aussies plus 1 lab puppy) all defer to her when they are inside.   Puppy Freya has her crate beside Purdey's bed, and the others take turns in being inside - it is so funny to see the younger ones "sealing" to her - coming in on their tummies, up to her & giving & receiving kisses :D

I hope you get as much love and enjoyment from your Purdey as we have had from ours.

PS Put your new shoes away though!!! :D :D :D

Hi, all my friends have Weims, all my dogs best friends are Weims so he thinks hes one too at times :) Fantastic dogs and your Purdey will be in heaven with all that space. My dog is called Morse hes nearly 18 months old and is a Pointer Plus Greyhound. Like you I waited many years for the right time to have a dog and have found lots of help and friendship here. Looking forward to hearing more about Purdey in future. :)

Hi pushy, good luck with your new arrival. You must be very excited!!! I am looking forward to my new addition at the end of May. Its not a weimaraner though, but they are lovely looking dogs. Hope you have lots of fun together, did you say you also have GSDs?

Hi Kat. Thanks for the response. I'm really looking forward to Monday and will let you know how we are settling in together.

I don't have any GSDs now, they are fabulous dogs and the choice of my father, with whom I used to show our dogs in obedience. They were wonderful to train and very rewarding. Now I think I have chosen a real challenge in a weimaraner but hopefully, with 30 year experience at dog training and my new-found champdog friends, we'll get there and enjoy doing so.

Hi I have a 7 month old Weim and his name is Blue.  He is the most loving, friendly dog I have ever had.  Every day is a joy.  You definately made the right choice with a Weim.

Hi and welcome to champdogs. I'm a "mature student" of dog ownership, too, having waited a long time for the right time to get my first (and definitely not the last!) dog. Sparky is an 11 month old BC, but we also have a bit of a soft spot for Weims. I'm sure you'll find everyone very helpful - especially if you're a novice like me!
Let us know how things are going, and good luck with Purdey.

Thank you for the kind welcom Tracy. I am so lucky that I found Champdogs, what a great forum it is. I have been made to feel very welcome and have received no end of really helpful and often amusing advice. It's nice to know that as you put it there are some "mature students" out there whose advice and contact are invaluable. Thanks again,
Lindsey

Thank you Kerrie for your reply. I agree absolutely that I have made the right choice, she really is a pleasure. As you are a few months ahead of me, I may well be calling on you later! They are fantastic dogs if you set down the ground rules from day one, aren't they. She really is a bundle of joy. She loves her new home and is very much loved by the other occupants ie Stephen and me!!. She is already part of the family and really settled in well and (cross fingers) a joy to train. She is so eager to please she will even pretend to "go wees", just to get the praise!! I expect Blue is equally as cunning. I'm sure we'll be in touch again. Enjoy,
Lindsey
