Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Have i got a wonder setter??
- By Guest [gb] Date 24.03.04 09:54 UTC
I have a year old irish setter named paddy, he is the most fantastically behaved dog, he flies off across the field, with one blow of the whistle, he is by my side!

I was told by friends and family, irish setters are mental and are often killed by cars etc, because they dont listen or come back once off lead!

Have i got a dog in a million, or is paddy just a normal irish setter!?

looking forward to your replies!

Hey Jude (sorry), I too have a very level headed Irish Setter, his name is Bailey, he's nearly 8 years old. He has always been really easy going, some are difficult to deal with because they are so mischievious. I have had some in the past that were quite naughty. In particular they didn't like to be caught to go home, but it's amazing what a pocketful of bribes will do.

It seems to me that Paddy is getting proper amounts of exersise, attention and stimulation, and has no need to be a 'wild Rover'. I wish you many years of love and fun with your Irishman.

It sounds asif you are giving Paddy all he needs!  Many setters run off because they are not given enough exercise and so they decided, as soon as they are off the lead, they will decide when they come back! All my setters now come back on a call/whistle/hand going into pocket full of biscuits!!!!!! BUT you try and put them on a lead BEFORE the end of the walk they they will go off and run some more!!!!

Setters are very smart and aslong as they respect you then no-one will have any problems!

I've no idea about setters.....but well done to you!!

Paddy sounds like a dog to be proud of, and you should be proud of yourself too.

Again, well done, and I hope you have many years of happiness with paddy.

Lisa :)
