i dont wanna cause an argument, or be called a troll, but id like to know what others think, i think that all breeders are puppy farmers, the good ones look after their dogs very well, then the others just dont give a **** what happens to the pups/dogs.
i hope you can see what im saying, i know most breeders are very genuine people, but in the end its breeding for the money isnt it?
Becky Granger
MOST CERTAINLY NOT! Our last litter ended up costing us in the long run as our older bitch ran into problems during her pregnancy and if we do choose to breed from any of our bitches it is because we feel that it will enhance the breed. If you ever tried to buy a puppy from me you'd think that I was part of the Gestapo as I asked about 70 questions of the people who bought from us and had to let some people down when they really wanted a puupy. Some 'breeders' are very clever and do have what seems like an endless supply of puppies available but that is certainly in the minority.

Sorry Becky your VERY wrong...a responsible breeder very rarely makes money from breeding a bitch. It is done because they very often want a pup to keep and always with the good of the breed in mind.A good breeder breeds from health tested animals and breeds for the improvement of the breed.

Becky would guess you have not been interested in dogs for very long or you would not has dreamt of suggesting such a thing. Make arrangement to visit a few breeders and then if you have the stomach for it visit a few puppy farms but then you would not be let in of course.

One thought for you Becky.
Dogs are not a wild animal in the UK so without breeders, dogs would die out in one generation.
If that is what you want then I dont know what you are doing posting on a dog board!
John

Many breeders are not puppy farmers. For one they are mostly health checked and registerd. From doing a a count we worked out that one the breedings that went well, without hassle, then we broke even at about 6 puppies, saying that there were times when vets had to be called out before or after the litter had been born and rarly made a profit at all from it money wise.
I have had one litter and grandparents have had 6 litters, all litters were raised in a spare bedroom where one person would sleep for the first four weeks!
Now this is the way for many people, infact some breeders have a seoerate, hygenically clean whelping room which the pups have and this has heating etc just like any other room in the house (if not better!)
How you can compare this to a puppy farmer who doesn't have health checks and keeps pups in terrible condisions I will never know. Also don't forget many breeders will say that they are always a telefone call away if help is needed, normally 24 hrs!!!!
Puppy farmers couldn't care less about what happend to the pups, aslong as they get there money!!!

Thats exactly the sort of statement my sister has been coming out with lately, she's recently started doing voluntary work for the local rescue (which I think is great :) ) but they have drilled it into her that all breeders are the same and just in it for the money.( which isn't so great :( )
If I hear her saying " why breed when so many die " once more i'll strangle her :)

I wish that I'd made money in the last 20 odd years with my dogs. Like everything in the world the majority of people care about what they are doing and not in it for the money. I love my dogs and very, very occasionally have litters. I've lost more money than I've made. I hope that I have improved my breed which I've had now for 12 years.

well said diane.
my vet bill the last 18 months has total over £7000.00, with a lost of a litter in 2002.only breed 3 litters in18 year of having fcr, plus the show and working cost, feeding and insurances.plus the love and care.
plus i go out to work to support my dogs my dogs do not support mr with a income ,
so there are alot of breeder like myslef that care for their dogs and the breed.

I have bred two litters and each one was a 24/7 commitment for 3 months. My latest puppies are now in their new homes and I feel like I am coming out of hibernation except not refreshed from sleep. It has taken over two weeks for me to revert to a normal sleep pattern and I am now looking forward to resuming my life with my latest new puppy. A puppy farmer does not make this commitment - and had a puppy farmer owned my bitch she would no doubt have had at least six litters by now and would be having another 3 or 4 to look forward to. With me she has had two and will not be having any more.

Becky,
How sad that you know so little about genuine breeders. none of them would say "I could do with some extra money - I'll breed a litter". They aim to breed something as good as or better than the parents and if they break even on the investment of money, they are pleased. The investment in time can't really be quantified.
Hi Becky consider this a puppy famer puts two dogs of the same breed (sometimes!) together and sells the pups to anyone who will buy!
A reputable breeder spends months researching pedigrees, showing or working their dogs to prove they are good enough to breed from, they then have there dogs tested for hereditory diseases, then they find the very best compatible stud out there who could be miles away, they will pay a large stud fee for a quality dog.
so even before the litter is born hours of research ,travel and a lot of money has been spent! add to that the vets bills, whelping equipment, worming, flea treatment, food ,registration papers and most importantly hours and hours of time from the breeder and do YOU still think there in it for the money!
to be honest Becky ive never heard such a mis informed ignorant stament in my life! :(

Sadly though it is a misconception shared by most of the general public not deeply involved in dogs, and also by thiose who ought to know better like Vets and Animal Welfare agencies.
In some way this attitude actually aids the puppy farmers. Mamy would be puppy buyers look on the breeder as a necesary evil, so that they can get their pup, so see no difference in one breeder to another.
Very sad!
Something that is also an invetment in ones breed is the expensive importaion of new bloodlines which you can never hope to recoup in any but the most numerically strong breed.

<<<"but in the end its breeding for the money isnt it?">>>
The breeder cried as we drove out her drive.....she cried as she saw us off the motorway slip road....she cried down the phone 4 hours after we'd taken one of her special pups.....and she was still choked up a fortnight later.
It was one of the most moving times I've experienced. This lady is still in contact with us 4 months later....this lady was NOT out to make money.

I don't get your statement either Becky.
The pedigrees that end up in rescue are most certainly not from RESPONSIBLE breeders. RESPONSIBLE breeders always take dogs/puppies back, and will always be there for the new owner. RESPONSIBLE breeders care what happens to the breed and aren't in it to make a quick buck. RESPONSIBLE breeders breed occasionally to a) improve the breed b) acquire a puppy for showing....they don't do it to churn them out for the money.
Like it has been said before, visit a RESPONSIBLE breeder then visit a puppy farm, and come back and re-read your statement and then see how silly it sounds.
(I am not a breeder btw, so am not biased in any way!)

becky, the trouble is nowadays with all this hype about "puppy farms" genuine breeders are getting tarred with the same brush which simply isnt fair. :-(

jo basset, the lady who sold you a puppy is clearly unstable, or very inexperienced at breeding, was it her first litter? I suspect so as no normal breeder who has been breeding for a while would cry at their puppies going to a good home!
