I seem tp remember Jo (Flatcoat) husband is on the committee of a society down that way. I'll make sure she sees this.

Well, John, I saw this all by my little self!!!  :-)

Guest, if you would like to phone 01428 653 828, we can fill you in with the details of Guildford Working Gundog Club, and of several others that might interest you.

Do Gundog clubs do actual training nights in a hall like regular dog clubs ??  (sorry if that sounds dense but I wasnt sure if its a active club or a club that just organises shows and sends out a quarterly magazine :D :D )  I would be interested in attending gundog training classes with my Irish Setter pup when I get him.  I live in Basingstoke, do you know if they do a class near there ??

Edit to say : Ive just noticed on Tohmes link a man from my village runs the one in Windsor so he may know, I will have to give him a call :)

With gundog work we need plenty of room BB. At the Bucks Area of the United Retriever Club we use a private deer park in Windsor Great Park. Last Sunday I was taking an all day puppy course for Flatcoated Retrievers and I suppose we used 30 to 40 acres of open ground, some woodland, a river and a pond (Lake) with an island in the middle at an estate at Great Brickhill.

I know very little about organisations which concentrate on pointer and setter work although at the course, David Showell of Coventry Gundog was taking the more advanced dogs and during lunch he was telling me that they run a pointer and setter class. If you like I will make some enquiries, someone is sure to know of something.

Best wishes, John

Setters and Pointers are as you know, not my group, but it is lovely to watch them working. They are normally worked as a brace, one quartering the ground to the right whilst the other to the left. The two dogs should cover all the ground and stay level with each other without crossing. As one dog finds a bird or whatever it should go on point at which the other dog should come across behind the first to back up the point. The dog on point should hold it until the handler arrives. It should never chase, or dive in after the bird. It's a very controled display of dog work and a joy to see when propley done.

Best wishes, John

We only work one pointer at a time for the grouse counts.  Not sure I could cope with two of them up there :-D.  I also got to meet my first working red and white setter.  She is a lovely dog and is certainly on my list of future breeds.

Hi Guest,

I was looking for gundog clubs in guildford a while ago.  Jo and husband were very  helpful with names and numbers - but as I have a springer spaniel there were none that were very close to guildford. (my girl gets a bit car sick so don't like to torment her too much).

There is a dog behaviourist in Loxwood that runs gundog classes, I think the starter class is Sat morning at 9:30, then he does intermediate and advanced at other times.  I haven't been so can't comment on whether they are any good (although my mum takes her Weimeraner and says they're great)  If you want a phone number email me on claire@cmyoung.plus.com.  I believe the clasees are around £5 for an hour and there are usually around 10 - 15 people in the class.

If you hear of anyone else closer that does gundog training (i'm in guildford town) i'd be grateful if you could let me know on above email. - Thanks

Claire
