Anyone used this natural calming treatment for nerves/aggression ?
- By mari [ie] Date 26.03.02 21:26 UTC
yep I did works well temporarily . cytagon b works over a period of time and is permanent, actually bangor try it and the serenium together . ;) never know chuckling :D oh also st johns wort is another natural calmer that is good. .my senile dementia is on hold for the moment. Mari
- By Banger [gb] Date 26.03.02 21:38 UTC
Thanks mari - how long did it take for the Serenum to work and the cytagon b ? Is the cytagon b expensive as I know that the Serene-um is for large breed dogs. Have you used st johns wart - whats that like ?
- By avaunt [gb] Date 26.03.02 21:42 UTC
Afghanistan is trying to re-build its economy, so dope is a cheaper alternative and you can both have fun as well....
- By mari [ie] Date 26.03.02 21:49 UTC
I have not used St johns worth . but my friend does . (dobe's. )finds it great .serenium does not take long cant remember how long, have none at the moment as i dont [fingers crossed ]have a dog problem right now. found it calmed down my dogs when we travelled to shows. but it wore off quickly . The cytagon b is brilliant . but is a three month process as it is a build up vitamin . calming the nervous system and keeping it calm . Mari oops forgot cytagon b was about £8 last time I got it must check it out though
- By alie [gb] Date 26.03.02 21:57 UTC
Where can you get this cytagon b from? I've never heard of it. Avaunt you really made me laugh with the Afganistan quip.
- By Banger [gb] Date 26.03.02 22:01 UTC

- By mari [ie] Date 26.03.02 22:17 UTC

And then there's skull cap and valerian isn't there ..... or is that just for emergencies? I havne't used it myself.

Lindsay

I've used skullcap and valerian on my dog for travelling in the car. She took it for a month to control car sickness, and it worked really well, and I use it still before long car journeys (unless they are mostly on the motorway) as she is still sicky on winding roads - previously she would be sick after only a few minutes, but now she's good for an hour.
I did'nt find it particularly sedating in that she was still pretty skippy, but it must have at least taken the edge off what she found to be a stressful situation because it solved the problem.

I use serene-um on my dogs if they're wound up about anything and it seems to work pretty quick for them (a collie and a GSD). Have you read Linda Tellington-Jones's book about her calming method, the t-touches? I've found this great for calming my two as well. I think it's called Getting in touch with your dog. It's very interesting too. Good luck with Max - I've read most of your posts and do feel for you, as my collie was very similar when he was young! He was an absolute nightmare and was climbing up the walls 24 hours a day!! LOL. Thank god he's now about 3 1/2 and has calmed down! (I wish I'd known about this site back then though!! he nearly put me off owning a dog for life!) I read about Max biting sleeves etc with interest too - Bracken used to wait till you had turned your back on him, then nip your backside!!! Good luck and hope you get Max sorted soon!

I am really interested in the one Mari recommended Cytagon B but can't seem to find any info on the web except for one reference to a drug called Cytagon which treats diabetes.

The only trouble with Serene-um is its cost and on a long term basis is not really an option, £5 for 30 tablets at 10 a day is quite expensive unless I can claim on my insurance (will have to look into that). I've heard of t-touch and again its another thing to look into, sort of acupuncture without the needles - if you get my drift.

Max does the bum biting too and occaisinally if you put your arms in the air out of reach will launch himself 4 feet in the air just to grab your sleeves - the little git :D
- By digger [gb] Date 27.03.02 19:16 UTC
Banger - instead of putting your arms in the air to avoid Max bitting your sleeves, try wearing a very thick jumper (or two) and simply folding your arms across your chest, if he persists keep turning away from him, otherwise ignoring him. It may take a few minutes, but eventually (if you persist) he will stop jumping and grabbing because it's not working........
- By Banger [gb] Date 27.03.02 19:19 UTC
Thanks digger but maybe purchasing a bite suit may be worth it.

Thanks Marie - Max has had his first Cytacon this morning :d
- By mari [ie] Date 31.03.02 16:27 UTC
I hope it helps Bangor truly. May I add that I think it is time you leave Max alone for awhile let him settle down. He is not getting a chance to be himself , just leave him alone for a bit and see what happens MARI

When using products sold for humans ie st johns wort how do I know what amount to give to my dog?
Do people use it as a one off or as an ongoing thing?
Id like to try it with my grumpy spaniel (sometimes snappy at other dogs) but would like some advice first
Thanks

I have a big problem with my GSP and vets, he hates them. Luckily I have a very good Vet who is also trained in homeopathy and acupuncture for dogs. When I asked, he suggested Phytocalm, although he's quite happy to see the Hell Hound without using anything, anyone tried this one. Ingrid
- By cleopatra [gb] Date 29.03.02 15:45 UTC
I was advised to use child portions of human homeopathy, and if you are going to continue it over a long period of time then use the smallest dosage, ie they come in 60, 30, 6, etc - only thing is i can never remember if the 60 or the 6 is the strongest!
- By westie lover [gb] Date 31.03.02 11:22 UTC
Hi, I'm not that brill on dosage but didn't realise there were child dosages. I thought one used the same dosage for a mouse or an elephant, but please someone correct me if I am wrong. I usually use the x6 for something chronic or on an already weak/poorly or v.young or old dog or x30 for an acute problem ( accident/shock/sudden onset of something), on a (usually) very fit healthy dog.
- By cleopatra [gb] Date 31.03.02 11:50 UTC
WL, one instead of two pills however many times a day. Says that on the homeopathy bottles i get, and only ever give human as dog stuff about 3 times more expensive!
