Hi All,
We're currently in a dilemma with our 10 month old Lakeland Terrier "puppy" -- to neuter or not to neuter. Hopefully someone/some of you out there can give us some advice on this.
Generally he's a well behaved dog. Does pretty much everything we ask him to apart from come to us when he meets other dogs/bitches.
Because he's too busy trying to "mount" them (whatever the sex)!
We've let him off the lead since he was about 6 months, and he's met loads of dogs during that time, and even though he wouldn't come to us immediately, we'd usually give him up to a minute before calling him and he'd come flying. Now we're finding we have to go back to "collect" him more and more; it's alright when the other owners don't mind/are happy to stand and have a chat while the dogs "say hello" but obviously some people take offence at their (in particular) male dog being "humped" by our male dog!
As I see it the options open to us are:
1) Leave him on the lead for a prolonged period, whether there are any dogs around or not
2) Put him on the lead when we see other dogs (but if he sees them first we've had it!)
3) Stay as we are and hope he calms down with age
4) Have him neutered
Please help!

Neutering will not make your dog more obedient :D It is not a magic wand which, after it is waved, all "pre neutering" problems disappear. :D
You need to do more training with your dog, he is at the Kevin stage where he will do the equivalent of "up yours" from now until around 18 months to 2; you must be relentless and consistent in your training and put him on a long line. Think yourself lucky that he has not been injured by either a p****d off dog or owner by now!
Dogs do not transform into well behaved individuals at a certain age any more than children do. They need a structured programme of training which leaves them in no doubt as to what is and is not acceptable and what is more rewarding. Allowing your dog to "bog off" and annoy other dogs and owners not only reinforces this behaviour (and makes it harder to "cure") but also demonstrates that you need to be more aware of your responsibilities to both your dog and others.
There is, unfortunately, no alternative to putting in the work required in order to achieve a well behaved pet which is a credit to you, the breed and dog owners in general.

I agree that you need more Obedience. I have a English Cocker Spaniel and I got Phantom when she was a puppy and now she is six year old. I have a Whippet and I got Chandler a year old and he wasn't neuted at the time. Chandler is now two year old. I had a year contract that I couldn't neuted Chandler. I put him in Obedience class and that helped alot.
If you not going to Show your dog then Neuted him. I find when they are neuted young they get better along with other dogs. They don't want to be the top dog. If you going to breed you dog please don't. You have to get you dog tested for problems in your breed and to many breeders don't check for problems.
Their are things you can do. If you have two people at each end one to call your dog and the other person is holding your dog. Have the best treat ever to give to your dog when it comes and then the other person calles and you hold. Do this about five times and then stop. You can repeat this three times a day. Other thing you can do is go in you yard and have a long leash and call your dog and if it comes give it a treat. If your dog doesn't come then tug the leash until the dogs come and give it a treat. Please if you use the word come then you can't use it when you are mad at the dog. Another thing I do is if I'm not sure that my dogs won't come I just use their name instead.
I just have to yell Phantom and Chandler and they come. One thing about the Whippets they can run really fast but were ever Chandler runs away all I have to do is call his name and I give him a treat. I'm soory it's long. I hope that hepls you.
