Topic Dog Boards / Health / Anal Glands that keep getting blocked
- By charles [gb] Date 22.03.04 16:00 UTC
I have a cross bitch who is 20 months old.  She was spayed after her first season.  After she was spayed, she started to suffer with her anal glands getting blocked at first I was only having to go to the vet once a month but now they are needing to be unblocked almost every week, her bottom is now starting to leak the most awful smelly liquid which my vet told me was where her anal glands were emptying themselves.  She is a very clean dog and keeps herself very clean hence now her breath smells awful and if she sits on the carpet it seeps into that too and I am having to use Oder Kill all over the place.  The vet has suggested having her anal glands removed although he has told me he has only done this once before, I have looked up the proceedure and it says that sometimes it can make the dog incontinent, which would be absolutely awful and I would not put her through such an awful operation which could cause more damage than good to her.  I have done some reading on homeopathic remedies and have come across two which I want to try, Graphites and Hepar Sulph, I have looked in all my local shops that stock books and have ordered Your dog and Homeopathy but it will not be in until next thursday, as I know many of you swear by homeopathic treatments I was wondering if some one could possibly tell me how much of each tablet I should give a day, I am quite desperate and she wants to disown herself to and is not very happy at the moment and not her usual self.  I have checked with the vet and he says that I should try homeopathy as some of his other patients have had great success using it, but he does not know how much I should give or how often.   He assures me that sally does not have any infection and does not need to have any antibiotics he also has said that it is a coincidence that her anal glands started to block after her being spayed.

I really would appreciate any advice on anything else I could try but expecially on the amount of Graphites and Hepar Sulph I should use and whether I should only use one or use both.

Many thanks for your help

Charles

You could try a teaspoon of bran(soaked)in her food i have been told by a retired vet who swears by it

Hiya Charles.
In the book that i've got, written by Richard Allport, it states the following:

Acute conditions - give 1 tablet every 15 mins for 3 hours, then 1 tablet hourly for the rest of the day. After this, give 1 tablet 3 times daily for 3 more days, or until symptoms disappear.

Chronic conditions - 1 tablet 3 times daily, for 1 week, followed by 1 tablet twice daily for 3 weeks.

If other forms of remedy are used then 1 tablet =one powder = 12 granules/pillules = 3 drops of liquid.

Hope that helps.
Also he suggests using silicea. He also states to add bran to food.
Of course you could look at changing your dogs food to another brand and see if this makes any difference.

Should've added that the normal potency is 6c, it states you should use the minimum amount necessary to initiate healing.
I think personally i would just use one, unless you've been advised to use two together.

Many thanks for your replies.  I feed her on Naturediet as she gets an upset stomach on dried foods even the hypoallergenic ones,  I also give her a knuckle bone from the butcher once a week.  I will try adding bran to her food and will start by using only the Graphites as her glands are leaking and see how things go.

Many thanks again.

Hi Charles, I think you would be better getting a diagnosis from a h/pathic vet. Once you find one you will need a referal from your allopathic vet, who, by the way, is obliged to give you one :) H/pathy is about treating the whole animal/body & what better way to do that than under the guidlines of a qualified h/pathic vet?  ;)

knuckle bones.... aren't they bad for dogs?
- By jumbuck [gb] Date 23.03.04 09:21 UTC
I use sanicular aqua for my bitch but it sounds more serious than this. I think you should go to the vet asap. Good luck.

knuckle bones are excellent when used for recreational purposes ie keeping teeth clean; they should not, however, be consumed as they are generally so hard that dogs can break their teeth on them.

Hi Charles,

I had alot of problems with my first beagle's anal glands. It started when she was only a few months old and carried on until she was about 14 months. We were at the vets with her a couple of times a month and then it got to the point where the vet showed us how to empty the glands as we were going even more frequently.
Now she only has them done every 3 months or so. The only thing that has changed is her diet. We put her onto JWB at 12 months old. I know your dog can't tolerate dry food but it was definately the diet that changed it for us. My vet also suggested an increase in fibre, as people have suggested with the bran.
The aim is to get them to have harder stools as soft stools make the problem worse.
