What do you normally look for and ask when doing a home check for someone wanting a rescue dog?has anyone refused people and how did you tell them?

I just say that if and when a suitable dog is found for their particular circumstances we will let them know.

When I have been home-checked before taking any of my rescue dogs the checker visited to make sure that my garden was securely fenced and that I knew at least the basics of being a responsible dog owner eg feeding the correct diet, regular exercise, boarding them in suitable accommodation when going on holiday, registering with a vet, importance of vaccinations etc.  I suppose they discretly checked to see the house was a suitable size for the breed of dog chosen and was not a 'health hazard' although I think being VERY houseproud might go against you as where there's a dog there's invariably dog hairs, muddy pawprints, half chewed bones and toys strewn about.

Never been refused so don't know what might be said in those circumstances.

I am a volunteer homechecker and we are told not to tell the person being checked that they have been refused.
We tell the rescue centre what we have found during the homecheck ( good points or bad) and the decision is then theirs . The centre tells the potential owner whether they have passed or not .
A  check can also fail purely on gut feeling and there may be nothing wrong with the home or the garden.
Interaction with family members also counts ( for example,  are the children allowed to run riot and therefore would a kitten/dog/cat/rabbit etc be safe there). And yes - Is the family too houseproud ? Too dirty ?

Are you awaiting on a check ? :)

I was home-checked and they did the same as Suzie above! and he played with my other dog and asked questions on her and what i'd do in different situations etc.
I was accepted so i guess i'm not as thick as i look :)

Just out of curiosity does it really go against somebody if they don't have a garden.  We have a small yard and I have always felt guilty that the dogs are missing out in not having a nice garden to go in.

It would depend on the breed, whether it spent the majority of its time out there and also the Rescue Centre itself - each Centre varies on what is and isnt acceptable

When we were looking for our first dog we were turned down by several rescues because we only have a small yard :( we were looking for a lurcher at the time so there was no shortage of choice in the recues.
We have two whippets now and after their three walks and runs a day all they do is sleep and the last thing on their mind is playing in a garden, its just a shame that so many rescues criticise anyone who buys a puppy but because of their policies, have left me with no choice but to do so :(
