Hi, we are having a few problems with Tally, she is now 8 months and still weeing at night. She was sleeping with us last week as we were having stuff done in the kitchen and it wasnt suitable for her..she didnt wake up all night or anything..would just nuzzle us awake at 6:30, when we took her out for a wee..which is all fine..however we put her back in the kitchen last night..and she had wee'd and pooed by 6:30..I then tried to let her out - she didnt want to go..but as I was tidying up she cam in and wee'd on the floor - in front of me???..I didnt say anything just cleaned it up. she can obvioulsy hold it but is choosing not to, we do praise her when she goes outside...but it doesn't seem to work. We are thinking of crating her overnight to try and stop this..what do you think? will she take to this even though she is now 8 months??..any guidelines for cages??..any help would be great, Thanks

Cage would be a good idea, has sh got a REALy comfortable bed! I mean something really soft and she can curl up in? This could be what it was, Also do you make sure she goes outside just before she goes to bed?
Anyway I think that a cage would help. I wouldn't think she would have a problem getting used to it aslong as you don;t just put her in it for the first time all night, gradually build the time up. Also get a metal one, althought its heavier she will be able to see out better as its her first every cage!

We found a playpen worked better than a crate/cage,more room and now Spice sees it as her 'den',she has never had an 'accident' either in the den or in the home since she was 9weeks old.
Maybe we were just lucky? but when we tried her in a crate for the 1st 3 nights at home she both wee'd,pooed and whined non-stop,then we bought her the playpen and she took to it immediately. We don't even shut the door on it now and she comes and goes in and out when she wants a nap and goes in there at night, all night no problem.
Jacqueline.
Hi
I'm sorry, but you write, that the night she slept with you, she didn't poo or pee inside, but woke you at around 6.30.
And then peed again the next night she was left alone. Couldn't she sleep on the floor in your bedroom?
That tells me, she doesn't like being left alone at night. My dog sleeps next to my bed every night, and has never had an "accident" during the night. She is now 11½months old.

Can I ask, is Tally a Vizsla (your post name maybe a clue !). We have 2 vizslas - Oliver who is now 15 months and Meg who is just over ten months. Oliver was a dream as a pup, and is growing into a super dog. Meg has been a different matter altogether. She has only recently (last 4 weeks or so) become completely toilet trained. We were pulling our hair out as we would go out and come back to another puddle, however it was as if suddenly something clicked with her and she suddenly realised that she was to go outside...We tried crating her but found that she was getting very distressed. I don't know about Tally, but Meg can be a very stroppy young lady !. Good luck - we know how frustrated you are.

Hi Shep, Yes Tally is a Vizsla, she just seems really strange, she can obviously hold her wee but as soon as she is in the kitchen she seems to have a calling!! she tells us she wants to go outside until she is put to bed in the kitchen, we dont make a fuss at all and ignore it..just hoped that by now we wouldnt be mopping up wee every morning!!!...maybe we should move her bed into the hall....I am v.sure this would sort out the problem...but I just dont know whats wrong with the kitchen!!!...yes she can be a stroppy young lady too!!! :-)
Hi
i would crate her at night until it is resloved once she has started to go to the loo in the house she will see it as aceptable,
lilly 5 month is out of her crate at night and doesnt mess the house.
I wouldnt reccomend letting her sleep on the bedroom floor as you will well know with a breed as aloof as a Vizsla the next step will be in the bed! fine if that is what you want!
also leave a radio on in the kitchen vizslas are very sensative and dont seem to like a very quite house a bit of background noise often relaxes them.
cheers kate :) owner of 6 ginger nutters!

Hi Kate
thanks for your suggestions, I really dont want to be in the habit of sleeping with Tally!! the times when we have slept with her she takes up the whole bed!! I think we will have to put her in a cage at night only, thinking maybe also to change her sleeping place from the kitchen to the hall..i think she has a "thing" about the kitchen at the moment!..she does have a light on at night..as she is still unhappy in the dark!
Im so jealous..I would love to have 6 of em!!:-)
Try and find a area for her to sleep that suits both of you and stick with is try covering the back and sides of the crate it helps them feel secure, but make sure shes got the front uncovered to see whats going on ,also give her a teddy i know shes not a little pup and shel probally chew it up but it worked with one of mine so its worth a try!
