I have a two year old border terrier who loves agility and he has really improved over the last six months, so much so that I was convinced by my trainers to enter my first show in two weeks. The thing is due to the weather I have not been able to train the last couple of weeks finally on Friday it was ok and we went off to training.
He went nuts!! Ran around like a looney and went for a dog who was tied up along the fence who was barking at him (ok so the other dog should not have been tied up there). After about half an hour he did calm down and we were able to work properly but this has damaged my confidence and I am having second thoughts about taking him to the show....in fact I am dreading it now...
Does anyone have any advice?

Go and enjoy the day. There are bound to be loads of people at their first show who are just as nervous about it as you. Do a bit of off lead training in the exercise area before you go in the ring and a little bit on the lead while you are queueing. Don't forget to take his collar off at the start. Have someone near the finish with a toy or treat if you are worried about him running off. Count as you go round then if you panic and forget the course you can just look for the number. If he goes under or round a jump call him back around the jump so that he doesn't back jump. If he goes wrong in the weave poles, start again unless you are certain which pole he came out of. On the contacts tell him he's a good boy whether or not he gets it, then if it's border-line and the judge isn't sure he'll give it to you. :D Thank the judge at the end of the round and come out smiling. Aim to get round a course without getting eliminated by about a year of competitions then if you do it sooner it'll be a bonus. ;)

I would also give him some rescue remedy before you set off for the show & when you get there, it won't make him drowsy, but will help calm him down

Thanks for the encouragement and advice, particularly regarding the weave poles, that was one of my questions lined up to ask my trainer this week.
I was quite looking forward to it until Friday, usually he does listen to me as he has learnt that he cant do it by himself! He really does love his agility so I will just have to bear with him!
