I went to my first open breed show today, after having nightmares all last night, my boy came away with a reserve in the junior class.  I also was very concerned about his height as he is only 19.1/4 in. to the shoulder and just turned 15mths. the judge said that when he matures a little more and gets more weight on him he should do well as he is sound every other way.  My question is although i am very happy with him should i be more pleased with the place does this mean i do have a good dog for showing or should i just stay with the obedience that i got him for.

you should be very pleased with your boys placing.I'm sure if the judge said he was promising its worth sticking at it...
However even if this judge hadn't placed you ,you should not give up...what one judge likes another will not and that is what makes it interesting.One day you get placed and another you get thrown out...but never get disheartened.My oldest lad was always last or thrown out in puppy and junior classes...he now has 2 RCC's...

Hi Guest, think this is your second post why do you not join us and then we can chat properly. We can't tell you what to do, your boy was worthy of a place but if you or he do not enjoy it then it would not be worth doing it however worthy you dog. To be honest unless you both enjoy it you will have trouble to really get very far because it takes work and enthusiasm to do really well in the show ring. Never the less lots of us just go showing because we enjoy it, it is nice to be placed and to sometimes get a top award but that is not why we do it, we enjoy the company of others, we study our breed, we pick brains and take advice. So it is up to you, do you enjoy it enough to continue, there is no reason why you can't continue with obedience as well.

Hi Guest, I do breed showing and obedience with my Border Collie, there is no reason why you shouldn't do both, as long as you enjoy them.  With breed showing you will learn a lot by sitting and watching, you will start to understand your dogs good points and not so good, go along to a championship show or one of the breed club shows, they are the best for learning.
