If you run a search on this topic you will find answers to all these questions and more. Type 'docking' into the search facility in the top right hand corner of the forum page.

No it's not illegal in the UK and it is done by vets.

we live in lancashire, i have tried all the vets in my town, nobody will doit unless the tail has an injury and it is nesessary, we were enquiring  because we are thinking of breeding our rottie. i have tried vets have you any other suggestions?
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 21.03.04 16:27 UTC
If this is the rottie you are talking about in your other thread then she is too old...puppies have their tails docked at a very young age
- By Val [gb] Date 21.03.04 16:36 UTC
Chloe is this your Rottie that isn't registered that you are thinking about breeding???
- By chloe [gb] Date 21.03.04 16:40 UTC
yes, we have maybe considered it, just exploring every avenue, she is too young yet, i learnt this recently, i am really trying to educate myself,
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.03.04 16:42 UTC
She is too old to be docked now. Even if she was registered you wouldn't be allowed to show her, being docked so old. There is an age limit. Leave her tail alone. Vets are only allowed to operate if the surgery is for the animal's benefit. Docking her tail isn't.

I don't think she wants the bitch docked but any subsequent puppies?

i know she is too old, i am leaving her tail, she loves her tail,
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.03.04 16:47 UTC
Only vets are allowed to dock, and not many are prepared to do so.
- By chloe [gb] Date 21.03.04 16:46 UTC
i was told yesterday that there are rotties shown with tails,
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.03.04 16:48 UTC
Yes, you can show rotts with tails. But if the dog was docked after a certain age then it wouldn't be allowed to be shown. This rule was brought in after an undocked spaniel champion was imported to this country, and docked for the showring. There was naturally an outcry and the KC changed the rules to prevent this happening again.

i could never even consider removing her tail now! when we bought her i was given false information, they couldn't dock there tails because they were not reg. they coudn't be reg because they didn't have dads details numerous things, we love her to bits, but we are going to do things a bit differently this time! if we decide to get her a friend, it will be through the proper chanels as i woulod love to do shows etc
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.03.04 17:18 UTC
Are you thinking of buying another pup then?

just had a look, so could that happen to my rottie, splitting her tail open when she hits things? very informative site thank you!

chloe, not sure if you quite understand, becasue your bitch is not KC registered, then her pups cant be registered either.  If you really are interested in eventually showing and breeding, you need to be thinking about keeping your girl just as the much loved pet she is, and looking for a registered bitch pup from good lines to start your show career with, and then, when she is old enough, and you know a lot more about the breed, consider breeding from the registered bitch.

It's very unlikely indeed.  Pups are done no later than 3 days of age and the owners of the pups have to be with the Council of Docked Breeds who advise on which vets to use.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.03.04 17:17 UTC
It's very unlikely that she will damage her tail. It is unusual.

i know breeders who still do it themselves :-( personally I prefer to leave tails on as nature intended, I  have docked in the past and removed front dewclaws, now my thinking has changed and I prefer not to dock and only remove hind dewclaws, which are only present occaisionally on some of the collie and spaniel pups.

thanks for all advice, her tail doesn't bother me, they look just as nice with or without!
