we mated our bitch boxer with a stud dog on the 10/11/12 of this month. all went well and they locked on all 3 occasions. unfortunately, the bitch got caught by a mongrel on the 15th and they too locked on. we have used the stud dog before and had a beautiful set of 8 boxer puppies. my question is, is it safe to assume that she would have got inpregnated by the boxer. looking forward to your replies

I'm sorry to say she may be pregnant by both the boxer and the mongrel.

There would be a very good chance that she is carrying a mixed litter.  If it were me, then I would talk to my Vet immediately about an injection to end this pregnancy.
Folks, am I right in thinking that because this bitch has been mated my 2 dogs, the pups must be DNA tested before they can be registered with the kennel club???  Or am I dreaming?
- By Fillis Date 18.03.04 18:20 UTC
No, I think you are right.

That was the subject of a recent thread I think.

Hi
I think you have 2 options...
continue with the pregnancy and DNA test the pups...register the pedigrees and sell the mongrels as just that.Bear in mind that the whole litter could be mongrels
End the pregnancy and then start again next time.
If you go with option 1 you are going to have to wait for another 12 months for your bitch to have a litter again.

Why 12 months Archer?
- By archer [gb] Date 18.03.04 21:13 UTC
Because if she has a litter of pups she should not be bred on her next season and so will then be mated on the season after that which will be approx. 12 months after her last litter.

Also if she has more then one litter in a year she couldn't register both litters. KC rule to stop bitches being used purely for breeding purposes

Hi this was changed litters can be registered within a year if the breeder is not licenced.:( Gillian

Not true.  The KC will register two litters in a year UNLESS the owner is a licenced breeder (ie licenced by their local authority), as the law states that licenced breeders can not have more than one litter from a bitch in one year.

That is madness!! So someone who is a properly licensed breeder who probably takes the best of care of their dogs is regulated, but someone who has just bred their dog no matter the reasons isn't!!

Why would anyone wish to be licensed then. It should be the other way round.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 19.03.04 19:31 UTC
You don't get a choice, it you do enough breeding you have to be licensed, so it would only be the sort of people who breed an occasional litter who for some reason may wish to take 2 litters in a year. Like the bitch is not far short of the age when they can no longer take a litter from her and in the first litter there was say only 1 pup or may be only dogs and the breeder needs a bitch to continue the line. Or could be any number of reasons.

At one time you had to get permission from the kC to do this but it appears that they now allow it with out your having to ask first.

Most licensed breeders will be running a commercial breeding kennel, with a number of breeding bitches, they have to comply to the regulations laid down and will be inspected by the local council. Hobby breeders do not breed loads of bitches or have loads of puppies so they are not required to be licensed.

You have to have a licence if you breed more than four litters a year, so all the worst puppy farmers are licenced.

fleetgold, i think you will find the worst puppy farmers are not licensed! and the very worst seem to come from ireland where there is no dog breeding law.

I was led to believe that you could have two consecutive litter, but not a third without a break, as a bitch may only have had a small litter in the first and then she may come into season again so the 2nd litter are born within the year. Regardless of being licenced or not.
I thought the KC changed their ruling when their was a lot of controversy when someones 2nd litter was born a day or two before the year was up of her first litter. It was front page news in the dog papers at the time
Can't remember the breed though.

If the bitch were only to have 1 or 2 pups then some might breed her on her next season .It is not down to KC rules but what is best for the bitch....to have an average size litter and then be put straight back in whelp is not fair on the bitch.
The KC rules are there as a guide line not as the absolute must !! There are exceptions to every rule but chances are this bitch will have an average size litter(pedigree or not) and then will need a break and so it will be approx.12 months till the next litter.

I agree Archer it isn't down to KC rules the bitches health and welfare must come first. Gillian

sorry chris but youre not going to like my answer! it is very possible the bitch could be pregnant to both sires! when the eggs are released they may or may not all be fertilised in one mating. you can cross your fingers and hope that the boxer getting there first will mean that MOST of the pups are sired by him, but there is a very good chance some may be sired by the heinz 57! especially if the bitch ovulated after the mating by the boxer, as some bitches ovulate later in their season. if you dont want to take the chance then a visit to the vets is in order the sooner the better :-).
