DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE IN THE IMPORT OF FROZEN SEMEN FROM ABROAD , FOR EXAMPLE HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR, ARE THERE ANY QUARANTINE RESTRICTIONS ON THE SAMPLE , HOW IS IT SHIPPED TO THE UK.

you are asking some strange questions today, have you already got a dog? and why bring semen from abroad ?do you live in england or abroad? i ask this as you asked about export/ import,and the rules are different if you are importing a dog that you are buying from abroad to import ,.as to living abroad and bringing your pet back.

There are loads of restrictions etc on importing frozen semen.  Defra are very helpful if you ring, but have not got the relevant details on the web site about canine semen.  Also customs & excise regulations to consider.  As it comes in in a special container, and would be transferred to your vets facilities on delivery storeage time is not an issue, it just stays frozen until required for use.  However, KC approval in writing is needed BEFORE the implant takes place, if the resulting pups are to be eligible for registration, and the details required by the KC include health certificates signed by the collecting Vet abroad for the stud dog, details of his progeny to date, etc, etc.  I think, at the moment, the KC will only registration pups from AI matings from dogs who are still alive, you cant used stored semen from dogs who are deceased.

i look into AI,BUT IT WAS SO DRAW OUT THAT IN THE END THE DOG IS STAY WITH ME AT THE MOMENT TO MATE MY BITCH AND STAYING UNTIL JULY.THEN HE GOS BACK TO SWEDEN,I HAD HIM SHIPPED OVER BYE PLANE,

I thought about it too, but I'm importing a dog instead near the end of the year.  Seems very complicated and there isn't really a high incidence of it working out!!  A lot of money to pay out when you may end up with nothing in the long run.

i think importing a dog or borrow a dog on loan for 6 month is the best forward,so far the dog i got cost £800.with flight food, showing.insurance so far,add another couple of hunderd on bye july,

but the biggest thing is the care you give that dog abit more than or own while he staying with and the responablity of it all,

at the monent with 3 bitches in season and with chase crying at 4am its hell here,but the swedish dog very good,just another 3 weeks to go.

Hi, bringing the dog in was not an option in our case - he is the top producing sire of the variety in the USA, and his owners would not be willing to part with him for any length of time!  We did send a bitch out to the states, the year before last, to be mated, and produced a lovely litter whilst introducing a completely new line into the breed over here.  (Sue T if you read this, max is one of this litter), but decided to try AI with Arrabella.  Could not have been more pleased with the resulting litter of 6!  But it was very complicated, very time consuming, and very expensive.

You can use the semen from a dead dog if it has been frozen and he was a proven sire BUT he would have to be at least 15 years old (If still alives) for the KC to allow this.    We had a litter in Munsters born last April from a dog that was dead but as he was born in 1984 the litter was registered by the KC.
