Topic Dog Boards / Showing / True Champion or not?
- By Arnold [gb] Date 20.03.04 12:01 UTC
Hi gang,

Can anyone tell me with regards to say the GPR group, is it true that your dog can only become a true champion if they are a champion on the show circuit and a champion in Field Trials?  So SF Champion & F Champion are that not still a champion??  I'm confused!!

Any help greatly appreciated.

Presume that you hit G instead of the H.  To become a full champion with gundogs they have to win in the field and at shows.  To be a show champion they just need to win at shows.  I do think it's unfair really  that gundogs have this, especially as many of the breeds in the other groups were working dogs at some time in their life but because of life changes etc. they are no longer used in the same way, so can become champions when just being shown.

Thanks Perrodeagua,

Yes you were right regarding the G & H my fingers run ahead of my brain.  Your answer is the one I suspected, I also think this is very unfair.  Will it ever change.......no I don't think so.

There was a discussion in the dog press some years ago I remember. Someone said that all breeds should first fulfill the purpose for which they were bred before becoming a full champion. Some wag asked, "Does that mean that the judge would have to eat the Chow Chow then?"

Does that mean that the King Charles Cavalier becomes Royalty?? :-) :-)

I have always thought that any dog winning 3cc's should be given the title of "show champion" because thats what they are, a champ in the show ring.  The "Champion" title, I think should still be for dogs which have gained working titles.

But what if they are not a working breed, should Peks prove they can crawl into someone's sleeve and Keeshond that they can jump barges :)

My breed are bred to hunt Elk but I don't think it would go down to well if we did some practice on the local deer.

interesting....so when are the bulldog owners off to bait a few bulls then.

Yes I think that would be a bit difficult to prove some breeds are capapble of doing a job which is now illegal! However, I do think that they should be SH Ch only. I believe they have to put obedience or agility if they are champions in those disciplines so why not show for a conformation champion?
