Ive been conversing with someone on here about some of the things we do as novices,I was telling her not to worry because we all do silly things when we start showing ( not that she has done a silly thing ) anyway I was telling her that my very first show I took My lab in and she won a first I was so excited I went to the secretary and asked if I could enter more classes ! then proceeded to walk to the phone box (yes it was that long agao no mobiles) and phone everone i knew completely missing the challenge for BOB and BP

I've gone to a show a day late, wouldn't mind but it was in Wales and my car broke down too!!! Went to the show next time round and won reserve best puppy in show!

We went to the show and forgot to take the dog!

:D :D :D @ Polly, I just nearly spat diet coke all over my keyboard when I read that :D :D :D
did you really forget the dog ????
Claire :)
First time I showed my dog I`d only been taught up & down & round in a square. The judge was Liz Cartledge & she said do a triangle, so there was me looking on the carpet for a triangle, meanwhile Bonnie walked out of her lead & went round on her own :D Judge said I needed some co-ordination classes

polly is not the only one that forgot the dog,
we all thought each other had put the dog in the car, i pulled into a petrol station about 2mins down the road from us,and normally when we pull up he bounces around in the back as he is a rottie we ususally feel the car move, and this time as i put the handbarke on all of us 4 of us turned around and then looked at each other in disbelief no dog,

When I first started, aged 13 or 14, I entered my dog for a Sanction Show. He was elligable for 9 classes out of the 25 so I put him in all 9. We won 6 firsts 2 seconds and a third. Crazy or what!!!

When I first started showing (age 6) I would cry if I didnt get a pulled out. by the age of 9 I would cry if I didnt get first :D :D :D What a spoilt brat I was ......... cant believe im going to go back into showing, im just hoping at 26 im not going to walk out of the ring crying .. how embarrassing !!

I used to do that, cry if I didn't get a good place!!!
Last time I cried at a show was when I won the handling qulifier for crufts!!! Also cried before I went into the ring as I was so nervous (I was 15 then!!)

I don't think I can beat Polly forgetting the dog!
I used to show a Rottie and bought a GSD. For the first 3 months of showing him I stacked him like a Rottie and even stood in front of him baiting! It took some very kind old judge to tell me what I was doing wrong! I was completely mortified that I had been doing it wrong for so long without anyone telling me!

Ashamed to say this, but I STILL do silly things, never mind when first started! Driffield last year I was permitted to take Patsy Pug (the hope of the Pug kennel at the time, previously only handled by Mike). Very nervous, but delighted at how well she was going (had gone through a period of being very shy and retiring). Got her ready, number on, went into ring for Puppy bitch, to be told by stewardwe were not entered - checked catalogue, she should have been in the ring for Minor Puppy! Couldnt face Mike for the rest of the day, so embarrassed!
bye
Gwen

Love it Gwen, just goes to show that even us experienced ones do things wrong at times :d

Yes I did really forget the dog. As soon as I realised I raced home to find her still sat where I left her, with her lead on waiting patiently! So we went for a long walk instead.

You know when you get 2nd in your class....and the dog that was first goes BoB. The judge then calls your dog into the ring to stand against the other unbeaten dog...well by this time I've usually packed up cage, boyfriend has taken dog back to the car...and I'm standing there on my own watching the BoB judging ;o) I still do that now...I obviously will never learn ;o)
Its easy to remember about BoB judging when you've won your class...but i always forget that sometimes the 2nd placed dog can be called back too....
Also..once, when on my own...had attached my male JRT to the towbar while I was packing cage etc back into the car. Heard lots of shouting from the GSD ring, and thought it must be all the 'outside assistance' that breed get. Turned around to get my dog, and found an empty collar. Looked up to find my JRT cavorting around the GSD ring, having a whale of a time ;o)....mumbling my apolgies with embarrassment we made a swift exit.

At our first open show in 1979, my stepdad entered our first Norwegian Elkhound in AV Pastoral. It's a hound! He also fell over in the ring at Border Union a few years ago - highly entertaining for all spectators. The most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me in the ring wasn't my fault - the judge when calling out the dogs to be placed in a varieties lineup called for the Keeshond for second place - no Keeshond there, just me and my Elkhound bitch and a bunch of other dogs that looked even less like a Keeshond. The steward, also looking confused, said "I think he means you!" Didn't know what else to do but take my place in the lineup, absolutely crimson with shame. Maybe it was just a slip of the tongue. The critique never appeared.
