we are haveing our 6 month old pups crown jewels chopped in 2 weeks to try and calm him down because he will wiegh about 10 stone when fully grown. does it actually calm them down.

Iwouldnt have him done at such a young age he needs to grow more before it's done IMO.
If you want him done the best time is around 12/18 months old as this gives him the time to develope.Jmo

<<does it actually calm them down>> not in my experience it often makes them worse. No to be fair it continues the teenage stage through till they are in their dotage, and that is hard to deal with in some cases.

IMO no dog should be castrated until they are full mature in your case about 3 to 4 years.

There is absolutely no guarantee that castration will 'calm him down'. Generally this is a job best left to maturity. Many people find that their dog's mental development 'stalls' when they are castrated, and they stay as hyper forever.

I think that's a bit young too.  I don't believe it does calm them down much anyway they still get manly urges and a lot depends on mental development.

The only thing it will do, apart from preventing cancer in the bits that are chopped off, is prevent procreation. Will not prevent him trying if the mood takes him though.

Like the others, if he was mine I would want him to mature in body a lot more before he was done

In this case, could Tardak be used to see if castration may help?

Would not be happy using a hormone blocking drug on a 6 month old. But it's not my dog.

I agree with most people, not untill he is mature.  I have never found castration calming a dog down, infact it keeps them at the stage when they were castrated.

I once read somwhere that the romans used to "castrate" young boys (human) to keep them young in mind (the way they did it I will not repeat for the fact of men looking!)  We also had our cat done at a young baby and he still, at 9 years old, acts like a young cat and always has done!

personally I would only castrate for health reasons in a dog.

But, joe, at the end of the day it is your dessicion, you make the choice and if you want your dog castrted then by all means have him done!
