I have a severe phobia of driving on mountain roads.  Just over a year ago I went to my friends in Spain and was driving.  I ended up crying all the way up the mountain and in the end had to stop and phone my friend to come and pick me up with someone else so that he cd. drive the car back to his house.

It was so embarassing.  It ended up that I was only a mile away from his house and that where I'd stopped was actually the end of the mountain road!!   It took me 3 hours and hour longer than it should of done.  Anybody else had a similar phobia and managed to beat it?  I really need to get it sorted as my friend is wanting us to drive and pick our dogs up later in the year from Spain and I'm dreading it already!!

spiders  enclosed spaces  enclosed spaces with members of the public (unwashed variety) being locked in small enclosed spaces with/without members of the public   that'll do for starters... and no, I have never conquered my phobias - could never even get close enough to
- By snoopy [gb] Date 18.03.04 11:09 UTC
I had a similar phobia a couple of years ago. I sought proffessional help as it was starting to rule my life, so i would advise you to do the same.
I also believe though that the only way to get over it is to face it.
Try not to worry and good luck.

I even hate saying the word but it's "DENTISTS" it's so bad i have to either have valium off the doctor before i go or the dentist will sedate me once in there.
:(

Birds of every variety!
Pigeons especially, and budgies.  My Gran has a budgie and I can't be in the room when his cage door is open, I'm sure he knows that I'm terrified of him so he dive bombs me!

Makes me laugh because I love to be on the top of a mountain and looking around me, just as long as my feet are firmly on the ground I'm fine.  Can't even go up steps that you can see through so can't climb ladders and can't go into my loft.  Can your GP refer you as I can't afford to pay for professional help?

Sharks

Can paddle in the sea up to my knees but only if the sea is clear, if murky cant go in at all

Am going to Mexico in July for my honeymoon and have made my fiancee promise he wont go swimming in the sea. How nasty am I pushing my phobias on to him but am absolutely convinced he'll get gobbled up if he goes in.

Silly girl!!!

Have never even been able to watch Jaws

Spiders, I really freak out, especially if hubby has lost it somewhere in the room.

Don't like frogs much either, when my neighbour had a pond they used to jump out of the shrubs when I was gardening.  I am sure they laid in wait for me.

Don't believe the bad publicity about sharks. Only a couple of species are likely to bit a human. They are stunningly beuatiful creatures - most are frightenned of people and nearly all the rest just swim past and don't bother. there are much tastier things in the sea than people. I used to be a little worried until a saw a 6ft long reef shark while I was snorkelling a few years ago. I followed it to try and take a picture but couldn't keep up. When  I thought that I had just been chasing a shark I laughed - not scared at all nowdays.

I was agraphobic (sp) for over a year,  eventually I was confined to my bedroom.  Its was a nightmare,  if I stepped out of my room I would have a panic attack. Even when I was in my room Id phone my mum to come home as I thought I was going to faint.
- By snoopy [gb] Date 18.03.04 11:37 UTC
Yes your gp will refer you, sometimes you have to INSIST though.
And there could be quite a waiting list.
They will either refer you for counselling or to a psychologist.

I had a dream one night of doing normal things.  Woke up and made gradual progress,  it took around four months.  But Im out all of the time now and love life.  Its has made me stronger, I no longer have panic attacks

Until I read this I'd thought I was weird with my long list of strange phobias (sand, sugary doughnuts, wind turbines, certain words [which I'm not going to tell you!] rabbit fur among them), but now I realise it is normal to be peculiar!

My Mum has a phobia of loose buttons - used to be really cruel as a kid and hide them in her bed!!!

I must say my phobia's are wasps (don't care where I am or who I'm with I'll scream, panic, and run out of any room that I've seen one in - have even ran out of a Senior Management Meeting before and looked very silly)

My other one is needles - injections, I never had my BCG at school, said they could expel me first but I wouldn't have it and haven't had one since!!
- By Jax [gb] Date 18.03.04 12:06 UTC
sugary doughnuts :D yummy.  Strange, because my hubby has a thing about floury bread/rolls.  He can't eat or touch them if they have flour on the top!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 18.03.04 15:59 UTC
Oh, and cockroaches (yuck, vile) of course.
- By dog-madness [gb] Date 18.03.04 11:59 UTC
my big fear, is death, and a life without dogs.
one advantage of death, is being able to cuddle my dogs that are waiting at rainbow bridge for me.
My babies, Molly and Pagan the labs, i miss them so much.

All right don't laugh:
I am petrified of Clowns and the people that do mime in the streets and also the people that paint themselves silver and stand really still.
I can't even walk past them, I go all cold and feel sick and yes the boys think I'm nuts. :)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 18.03.04 14:16 UTC
I hate people dressed up in stupid animal costumes. Disneyland and the like would be a total nightmare.
- By boxersaffie [gb] Date 18.03.04 14:39 UTC
I have a phobia about injections (needles), and mens feet.  Womans feet are ok but mens are disgusting.
- By heidleberg [gb] Date 18.03.04 14:51 UTC

- By EMMA DANBURY [gb] Date 18.03.04 14:56 UTC
Ah my brother has a phobia about bananas he can't sit in a room with them. If a supermarket has them at the entrance he canot go in.  He says they are worse if they are peeled because he can smell them aswell.  Strange man!
- By Rachel20 [gb] Date 18.03.04 15:27 UTC
Hearn completely agree with you about clowns!  And any other person when you can't see their face.  I just think who could be in there and imagine its someone horrible!
I hates Father Christmas when I was little and screamed the grotto down!  I still find him a bit scary now!
- By earl [gb] Date 18.03.04 15:56 UTC
Ok here goes - and no laughing!  I am terrified of spiders, beasties of any description, birds, heights, needles (as in injections) and the P word (another word for knickers!).  Think that's about it!  :D

As a kid I was also terrified of going to see Father Christmas.  I think my mum was disappointed at never having any pictures of her little girl sitting on Santa's knee.  Didn't stop me liking Christmas Day tho!
- By stephanieohara [gb] Date 18.03.04 15:59 UTC
Hi Earl, whats wrong with the 'P' word :D
- By LJS Date 18.03.04 16:13 UTC

- By stephanieohara [gb] Date 18.03.04 16:19 UTC

- By earl [gb] Date 19.03.04 08:54 UTC
La La La, I'm not listening!  It's a vile word!!!
- By craigles [gb] Date 18.03.04 16:05 UTC
Birds, I really don't like them, I even avoid the pigeons up town, have to walk around them whilst everyone else is merrily walking through them!  Children really annoy me when they find it amusing to run into a group of pigeons and the start flying towards me, well i freeze hold onto whoever i'm with and just hope and pray they don't touch me.  so far i haven't screamed!
- By gundogsrbest [gb] Date 18.03.04 17:35 UTC
ladders, im not scared of heights and i can climb trees, scaffolding etc but ladders nope no way, is probably from when i was little, mum says i would never walk across a pier or railway foot bridge etc, as i could see through it and didnt like what was underneath

I have two phobias,
Dentists - last time I went someone else had to make the appointment and I had valium and still I went rigid when I saw the chair - the dentist and assistant had to prise my hand off the door handle and carry me in !!   I'm very brave with my kids tho and always go in to support them and make sure they're not traumatised like I was.

Wasps - I go rigid, can't even scream and run.  One year on holiday I got stung in a grocery shop, amazingly I was really angry about it and after the screaming, just swore a lot (the air was blue) and stomped around shouting for vinegar.  Trollgirl told the shop girl I had Touretts, poor woman clearly thought I was a raving lunatic (I was :D )  Luckily the kids haven't picked up on it, I'd hate them to be as scared as me.

I also used to be terrified of the dentist until my daughter phoned around and found one for me that was sympathetic towards people that were phobic.  It took a while but over several visits I was helped to overcome my fear and in fact I even look forward to going now because I have a lovely drug-induced sleep.
