Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / COCKER OR SPRINGER!?
- By Guest [gb] Date 17.03.04 08:46 UTC
I am now in the position to get a puppy for our family, we want either of the breeds above, show type english cocker or show english springer.

We love the size of the springer, but people have told me they are aggressive with other dogs, is this true?

also exercise wise, we could give the dog at least 1 hour a day free running, and swimming, would either dog suit this?

any help would be great! thanks xx

Not the image i have of Springers from those I've met always think of them as nice dogs. I imagine they will differ in temperament betwen individual dogs like any breed.

I've had 2 Springers and a Cocker, all completely different characters but all friendly. Friendliness depends on each individual dogs  temperement, how the owners handle them etc, but I'd say the most important is whether they've been socialised with other dogs as puppies, that's very important as they learn doggy etiquette...... how to behave and interact properly with other dogs. :)

Both are very active breeds as they are bred for working  but my Springers were both more active than the Cocker.

Edit. Just read your post again and saw you're talking of show types. Mine Springers were both working strain so a show type may be more sedate, not sure but someone else may be able to tell you that. :)

My neighbour has very sedate cockers that he drags along the street on a lead three times a day.  They don't go off the lead at all whilst out, not something I could imagine mine doing.  The show type springer that I know is completely different to my working types.  He will trot along the footpath without deviation whilst mine are running like lunatics from one side of the field to the other and wouldn't dream of going into the undergrowth, he looks at my two like they are mad.  I certainly wouldn't say he was aggressive but just a totally different temperament to any of the hundreds of working springers I know.  OK hundreds is an exaggeration..........;)

Maire....your email address would appear to be incorrect?

I have a working springer, mad as a march hare but always been lovely with other dogs, even though he has been attacked a few times it has made no difference to his happy nature.  My sister in law has a working cocker.  She is lovely with other dogs too, so I agree with the others, its important as with all dogs to socialise them properly when they are pups.

guest can i suggest a "sprocker" a mix of the two breeds? they make excellent pet or working dogs and can often be found advertised in sporting press/gundog magazines :-)

haha cockers that are sedate ooo i wish :D nah i love mine really. ive always had show cockers and belive me there lively .i had one slow one but she had bad knees other then that there busy little things that are  loveable jump about like nutters and are cute as hell. working cockers are veryv lively , but really show cockers are very lively too , there not slow at all , :) springers are nice dogs but i havent had much exsp with them to know which one would best suit you , i just know cockers can run about for hours without being tired :D :) i think all cockers need a good run ,

both breeds are very energetic, cockers being smaller will take less exercise than the larger springer
Springersshould be getting AT LEAST 1 hour a day.
of course the more the better :D

with regard to the aggression, ill echo what the other posters have said, get your puppy out and about as much as possible when young, and meet lots of doggies, then you will have one gorgeous friendly dog!

good luck in what ever breed you choose, you wont be dissapointed! :D
