Its official - I'm a mad cow. Pity because I'm AB neg so I make a point of giving blood regularly. :(

Funnily enough , I am AB rhesus negative and so is hubby :) One of the rarest blood groups around apparantly :) Luckily I haven't had a blood transfusion so I will still be able to donate

Daughter is dragging me along to her next donating session, as I have always said that I will do it and haven't got round to it :) I'm A neg - she's O neg, so although not rare, they like the O's :D

Mel - just been reading a bit about blood groups - your in 1% of the population, so it is a big coincidence that you and hubby have the same type :) I'm only in 7%, so quite a common person :D
Daisy

Yup ..its odd how we are both the same :) Now I wonder if the children will be AB neg or A neg or B neg ?
:D

I suppose I ought to ask the doctor if I've had a blood transfusion. I had the Boy by caesarian in 1986, and I don't know if I was given blood or not ...

Whey hey thumper. I am B neg as well. second rarest, and dont get letters saying "can you come and give blood" I get letters saying Be there or else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is something in the B neg blood group that is only found in this particular group.

B neg blood can be given to B pos people, but not the other way around, I think - so you are very useful :)

I think this is maybe being over cautious ? They do not know the risk. Rducing the possible amount of donors because of this may put more lives in danger. The already depleted stocks of blood could become even more depleted and so risking lives that way ? Surely they could get patients to sign up when they agree to being a donor to say if they need a blood tranfusion they don't mind having blood from a donor that has had a blood transfusion ? I would have thought there is a high donor rate amongst these people as it may well have saved their lifes so they would naturally want to help others. I for one would have the blood rather than risk having an alternative blood group etc because they didn't have the right blood in stock.

I agree Lucy.
I'd always wanted to give blood, but was a bit scared to.(always said I will another day)
Then I had to have a transfusion & it made me realise that someone else must have plucked up the courage to go - which saved my life! So I went (fainted after the first time) But been fine ever since & I do feel I'm giving something back.
If I have to stop giving now I will be disapointed. :(

Completely agree Lucy, especially for people who have the rarer blood groups - and there seem to be quite a few of us on CD!

I'm A neg, and haven't been able to give blood since last April because I had minor surgery. But I hope I'll be ablt to donate again. I've given 30 times so far, and would like to get a bit higher!
:)
O here too, I was borderline for a transfusion when I had my second child, thank goodness they decided against it, I'm intending to go for gold!!!

well that's me out the blood donor sessions! I was transfused in 1995 after an op I had! I expect there will now be a shortage as surely this will affect quite a lot of people?

Well Im O Rh -, so my blood can be given to any of you in an emergency but I can only be given O Rh - blood in a transfusion. My hubby is O Rh +, so I had to be carefully monitored during all 3 of my pregnancies in case of my blood or the babies blood mixing through the placenta. All my children were born with O Rh + blood.

I'm the same as you Sue but I had to have a transfusion in 1981 after I had my daughter so I won't be able to give any more blood. At the time I was worried about HIV and Aids.
