The first night she came here she licked or 'mouthed' a toad and it obviously peed on her tongue and she foamed at the mouth, loads of slimy drool!! she was ok after that but two weeks on she obviously didnt learn and my dad said he thought she may have eaten one. she came in drooling/foaming again and munching some poor toad who was just out the back trying to get it on with his fellow toads.
I am wondering if this might poison her? i wouldnt have thought so as we dont have poison toads here, but i knwo they arent tasty. (not that i've tried)
anyone think i should worry?

Toads squirt a caustic substance when they are disturbed, my first dog was squirted and came up in terrible weeping sores about 5 minutes after. The Vet just gave him anti inflammatories. Obviously the degree of damage can depend on the size of both the toad and the dog.

She seems fine in herself and the other night when squirted in teh mouth didnt seem any worse for ware. She's nearly collie size (almost) now and the toads outside are pretty small. unless she got two at once!

Yes, I would worry. :( Toads in the UK exude an hallucinogenic toxic substance, that can kill a small dog. In fact I once heard (though can't confirm its veracity) that it is actually illegal for people to lick toads for this substance ... sounds very weird, but people do very strange things sometimes!

I had a bitch who, at this time of year would regularly kill (or maim!) toads. She'd scare non-doggy people to death as she'd appear in front of the patio window, foaming at the mouth & rolling her eyes. She died last year - nothing to do with toads - she was 16 1/2yrs. Her grandmother once swallowed a toad whole, I tried everything including soda crystals to make her vomit, but no, the toad stayed down & so did the soda crystals. We didn't call her ol' iron-guts for nothing!

Well now its about 3hrs since she swallowed it and she is as perky as ever. She may not have eaten it atall and just got squirted. As far as i could tell this evening she wasnt hallucinating!;)

Tell her to stick to frogs from now on -- which I once heard described on a nature programme as "the hamburger of the amphibian world", e.g., they get eaten by everyone (including themselves.)
I had a dog that used to catch toads. The first time she really foamed up - after that I think she knew what was coming and let them go quickly. Less foam, almost as much fun for her.
