hi, one of my girls has been mated and is having a scan to confirm if she if in pup or not next week, she's about 30 days into it. Shes a bit of a fussy eater at the best of times, and she's not really eaten anything to speak of for 4 days, she's fed on Burns, sometimes with tripe, however, since returning from Crufts laden with smaples, she's tried Hills, Vitalin Bitch Diet to name a few.
Any suggestions?
Does anyone else have this problem with in whelp bitches?

thanks for any tips and suggestions

Hi,

In the absence of other suggestions, I'll trot out my well worn 'rice pudding' recommendation - it's all my bitch would eat for most of her last pregnancy, and she had 8 nice healthy pups with no problems.

Poor girl, you could see she was ravenous, but as soon as she put her head in a bowl of anything meaty, her stomach obviously flipped and she couldn't eat it ..... loved her rice pud though, and rather she ate that than nothing.

I was told to try sardines as the smell usually gets a fussy dog to eat.   You could try Welpi - it contains lots of vitamins & minerals.

I have heard that with pregnant women who feel a bit queasy in pregnancy, ginger biscuits is the thing to give.....maybe worth a go?

My bitch did this around the same time. We switched on to canned puppy food and had no more problems - worth a try.
Oh and a boiled egg for supper!!

Good luck, I know how frustrating it is when they are on hunger strike, Aimi x

Try giving garlic sausage, I found that if I cut it up into little pieces and mixed it in with the food she ate it also Haslet, seemed to be a favorite, mind you I got some funny looks at the deli counter in sainsbury's, going in every day for a pound of each.....Pat

My food alternatives are usually tinned tuna or cat food....99 times out of 100 that'll get my fussy pregnant bitch to eat something.

It might not be the correct food for a pregnant bitch...but at least I know she's eaten something.

Mine generally tail off their appetite at around the same time as yours...and i find i need a whole cupboard full of tuna & cat food pouches to keep her eating for the rest of the pregnancy.  I'll mix in her normal food with it (a breeder mix) to ensure she's ghetting the right nutrients.

Good luck...being off her food is common, but it is worrying at the same time.
