Hello

We're looking for a dog and the American Eskimo Dog sounds like the perfect dog. Too good to be true - which might explain why we can't find a single breeder via the Internet! Please could you let me know if you have a contact for a breeder of American Eskimo Dogs?

Many thanks

Marion Janner

I only know of the Canadian Eskimo dog ..could that be one and the same breed? Do a search on google.com for that breed and you will find links :)

There seems to be a lot of interchanging of names with the Eskimo Dog and the Greenland dog and some people use the term to apply to most the larger northern spitz. So unless the guest joins and lets us know a bit more about the dog or what it is that it is ideal for we may not be able to help at all.

Guest try looking under Canadian Eskimo or Greenland Dog. Would love to know what it is that it is ideal for, unless it is pulling a sled :)

I wondered if the Greenland dog was the same or not Jackie ...it leaves me confuzzled I have to say :D I daresay those in the breed know what they are though :D :D

Was asked this by Admin a while back, I believe it is the same dog but I am not sure, if you look up eskimo dog in the KC standards it says see Greenland Dog.

I believe the American Eskimo Dog is a small White Spitz breed not dissimilar to the Japenese Spitz.

Then of course there are those people who are breeding crossbreeds and calling them Inuit Dogs in one breath and saying they are wolf crosses in the next..

aren't they call untangos or something now :D

If my memory serves me right, in the UK they all used to be Eskimo Dogs & were split into Eskimos & Greenland, then the name was changed & the Eskimo became the Canadian Eskimo Dog. Eskimos are bigger & heavier than the Greenland which is a gorgeous breed - have seen them in Denmark. Think both breeds have all the same issues as Sibes - don't trust off lead, loads of energy etc.

American Eskimo Dogs are nothing like Canadian Eskimo Dogs. They are small dogs, about the size of a buhund, but look just like a Samoyed. They aren't sled dogs at all, so no idea of their temperement or suitability. I don't think they are a recognised breed in this country.

The American Eskimo Dog is basically our German Spitz under another name. Don't think they are recognised by the AKC

If you follow the link I gave that was from the AKC site!!

Anwen...you are correct :D except the Canadian Eskimo's are smaller than the Greenland dogs :P

Aren't American Eskimo's also Klee Klai (sp?) ?

Confusing, and I was wrong the KC does list the Canadian and the Greenland but the Nordic Show does not, classifing the Greenland and listing the Icelandic no mention of the Eskimo dog at all - may be there are none in the UK but I had a feeling there are. Only way to find out I supose would be to ask the Finnish Spitz Club who host this event.

Ok more confusion the Dr Bruce Fogle encyclopedia lists the Canadian Eskimo Dog as weighing 60 to 105lb thats about 50kg, some Buhund. The Am Eskimo page shows a sort of crossbreed that looks very like the Japanese Spitz except it is too long in the back, it appears that they are recognised by the AKC and come in 3 sizes. They do look spitzy but do not have the expected spitz head being very snippy and judging by the pictures very loose coats. All that is assuming the book has it right, their record is not very good.

Sorry Jackie for confusion in my post, I wasn't saying Canadian Eskimos were size of Buhund, believe me I know how big they are! I was saying the American Eskimo dogs were small and that sort of size. Not a good comparison I know! Have a look here ...http://www.akc.org/breeds/recbreeds/amesk.cfm.

They are an AKC recognised breed, but not KC as far as I know. Think the Alaskan Klee Klai has some in its breeding, but they aren't a recognised breed yet I don't think. To help the Guest, I don't expect there are any in this country, which is where their problem is. Have you thought about similar breeds?
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 15.03.04 08:15 UTC
They do look like the Jap. Spitz to the casual onlooker - thing is we do not know what the guest has read to make them think that this dog is everything they need. If they are a typical spitz then you and I know they are likely to be a noisy handful and hairy toboot.
