Looked this up in the Book of the Bitch and they give the number born and the number registered (one assumes the difference to be pups that don't make it). Anyway in all other breeds the number registered is lower than the number born, that is except the SBT.
Their birth figure is given as 4 to 5 and the registration as 7. Guess it is a misprint and may be my copy is a bit old (1994) but it does make one wonder where the extra 2 come from - the mind boggles. :D

expect anything from say 4 to 8. we have had a litter of 9 and we had to help the bitch bysupplementing both her feed and the puppies as they were big strong puppies.

average litter would be 4 to 6 but it depends on the female my first had 2 litters of 8 and 9 and i thought that was enough and never bred her again :-) i have heard of a litter of 13 and i do not know how the breeder coped.

Jackie, my latest copy of the Book of the Bitch arrived yesterday and it gives the same figures as yours. You are right as it also says that "the difference between average number of puppies borm, and the number registered at the Kennel Club is taken to represent the number of puppies which die before 21 days old or which are in some way sub-standard." I can't understand these figures either, although maths was never my strong point.

my friends had a litter of 13 but the poor bitch had to have a section and could hardly cope with the pups.Is this very unusual then 13?

Jacky, think someone should point this out to the publishers, will you or shall I ? 10 years is a long while to be publishing the wrong details.

I've emailed them!
I also noticed that on their list of up and coming publications, there is a book due to be released in April called "Breeding for Dummies" Appropriately titled perhaps for a few posters! :)
